Keepsakes and jewelry for a hamster's or rat's ashes, sized for a small life
A hamster returns only a few grams of ash, roughly a teaspoon, and a rat about a tablespoon, so either can be shared across several small keepsakes. Standard urns are far too big, so look at keepsakes made for tiny amounts: an ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[1], and glass pieces need even less.

What keepsakes work for a hamster's or rat's ashes?
Choose pieces designed for a pinch of ash: a small glass or metal vial, an ashes pendant, a glass bead or a tiny keepsake urn of an ounce or less. A Syrian hamster's ashes fit comfortably in one of these; a rat's, from a body the Merck Veterinary Manual puts at 350-650 g as an adult, can be split between two or three. Anything sold as a "small pet urn" is usually made for cats and will look nearly empty.
If you haven't arranged cremation yet, check it will be private and that the provider uses a tray for very small pets. Otherwise there may be nothing to put in a keepsake. How much ash does a rodent leave, and what will it fill?

Those amounts follow the 3-5% rule, close to the 3.5% average found in a study of 100 cremations. Glass memorials use only 1/8–1/2 tsp[2] of ashes, so even a mouse can usually supply one. The main choices
Which ashes keepsakes are worth considering?
- Keepsake vials. Clear glass with a cork or screw stopper, or a small metal tube. Cheapest and simplest, and you can see the ashes.
- Mini keepsake urns. One retailer lists keepsake or mini pet urns at about $15–$60[3]. Look for capacities under 2 cubic inches.
- Ashes pendants. At one retailer, stainless steel necklaces start from $19.95[4], and its guide puts cremation jewelry more broadly at $30–$300+[5]. Most include a tiny funnel for filling.
- Glass pieces. A glass bead, pendant or paperweight with a swirl of ash fused inside. Studios typically ship 2–8 weeks[6] after receiving the ashes.
- Sterling silver charms. At one US retailer, sterling pieces had a median price around $129[7]; these feel more like heirlooms.
Without ashes
What keepsakes don't need ashes at all?
Some of the loveliest rodent keepsakes don't use ashes. They're a good choice if you buried your pet, chose communal cremation, or simply want something extra.
- A tuft of fur, clipped before burial or cremation and kept in a locket or tiny envelope. Crematoria sometimes offer this for a few dollars.
- A paw print. By our estimate, paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of ~$32[9]. Rodent paws are tiny, so ask to see a sample before paying.
- A printed or engraved paw charm made from a scan or photo of the print.
- A photo pendant or locket, which suits pets you remember most through photos.
- Their hideout, hammock or cage tag, kept on a shelf or in a shadow box.

The big-ticket options
Can you make a memorial diamond or preserve a hamster?
Memorial diamonds from ashes usually aren't possible for rodents. One lab needs ~100 g[10] of cremated remains, and another asks for 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[11]. A rat returns well under 100 g, and 5 g of fur is more than most small rodents can spare. If a company offers one for a hamster, ask exactly how much material they need.
Freeze-drying is possible but costly. A UK guide puts it at £300 to £500 for hamsters[12], and one industry report says small pets take about 3 to 6 months to come back[13]. It's a very personal choice; some families find it comforting and others find it unsettling, so talk it through before deciding.
Practical tips
How do you fill a vial or pendant with a small amount of ash?
- Work indoors, away from drafts, over a plain sheet of paper so nothing is lost.
- Use the funnel provided, or roll a small cone from stiff paper.
- Use a tiny spoon or the end of a clean straw to move the ash a little at a time.
- Tap gently to settle it, then seal the screw with the glue supplied if you'll wear it daily.
- Tip any spare ash back into the main container, or ask a jeweler or the crematorium to fill it for you.

How much ash fits in a cremation pendant?
Most ashes pendants hold only a pinch, around a teaspoon at most and often less. That suits rodents well: by our rough calculation, a Syrian hamster's few grams of ashes (about a teaspoon) can fill several small pendants, and a rat's (about a tablespoon) can fill a keepsake urn with plenty left for pendants.
Is there enough ash from a mouse for jewelry?
Usually enough for one small piece. An adult mouse leaves roughly a gram of ash. A glass bead or pendant, which needs only a small fraction of a teaspoon, is the most realistic choice. Confirm the cremation is private and that a tray is used, or there may be too little to recover.
Can I split my rat's ashes between family members?

Do I need a special urn for a hamster?

Can I make jewelry from my hamster's fur instead of ashes?
Yes. Fur can go into a locket, a resin pendant or a glass piece, and it's a good option if you buried your pet or chose communal cremation. Clip a little from the back or side before burial or cremation, and store it in a small paper envelope.
