A hamster that seems to have died in a cold room may be in torpor, so warm them gently for an hour or two first. What the cost guide covers
Small pets are priced awkwardly. Crematoria use weight bands built for cats and dogs, so a 120-gram hamster often lands in the same band as a small dog. In the US, that lowest band commonly runs $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[2]. It also covers pet cemeteries: by our estimate, the median whole-body burial for a small pet across five posted US price lists is ~$350[3], plot and opening included.
It also covers the part many owners skip: getting it in writing. In the Competition and Markets Authority's UK survey, only 52%[4] of cremation buyers recalled being given price information. Why we wrote a guide for teachers
Hamsters, rats and gerbils are classic classroom pets, and their short lives mean many teachers face a class pet's death at some point. The guide covers the first hour, how to tell children of different ages, what to send parents, whether burial on school grounds is sensible and who pays.
Adults often feel unprepared for this. In an RSPCA pet-loss survey, 93.4%[5] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss. The classroom guide works alongside our post on talking with children about losing a rodent, which parents can use at home.
It also covers the awkward edge cases: a pet that dies during a holiday stay at a pupil's home, a child who is far more upset than the rest of the class, and whether to replace the pet at all. Hamsters are nocturnal and solitary, so the guide suggests talking to a rescue about a more classroom-friendly choice.

Our approach
How these guides are researched and written
We're an independent guide and request service for small-pet aftercare, not a crematorium. Figures come from published sources such as veterinary studies, regulator reports and posted price lists, and each is footnoted. Where we've done our own arithmetic, such as working out ash amounts from body weight, we label it as our estimate. You can read more on our research page and about page.
Rodent-specific data is scarce. Hamsters and similar pets make up a small share of pet households; 18% of US small-animal households have a hamster[8], according to the American Pet Products Association, and most aftercare research focuses on dogs and cats. Where we can't find a rodent figure, we say so and explain how the general figure applies.

Questions people ask
Are these guides written by a crematorium?
No. We're an independent guide and request service for small-pet aftercare. We don't operate crematoria, vans or facilities. When you contact us, we reply by email with options and prices from providers who serve your area.
Do the guides cover gerbils, mice and degus too?
Yes. Most of the advice applies to all small rodents kept as pets. Where species differ, for example torpor in hamsters or group living in rats and gerbils, the guides point it out. Rabbits and guinea pigs have different needs, so we don't cover them in detail here.
How often are the guides updated?
We review them regularly and show the date of the last review on each page. Prices change, so treat any figure as a starting point and always ask providers for a current written quote.
Can I share a guide with my child's school?
Of course. The classroom goodbye guide is written for teachers and can be shared directly. It covers what to do on the day, how to talk to the class, what to tell parents and how to decide on aftercare and costs.
