The main choice
Private or communal for a pet this small
With private cremation, your pet is cremated alone and the ashes returned are theirs. With communal, several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back. UK regulators at the Competition and Markets Authority found communal is 2x to 5x cheaper[2] than the individual equivalent for the same weight, and for a 100 g hamster the price gap can feel large next to what the pet cost.
There's no wrong answer. Many families choose communal and keep a photo or a fur clipping instead. Others want something to hold. Our services page compares every option side by side. A pet rat, which lives about 1.5-3 years[3] according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and weighs 350 to 650 grams as an adult, returns roughly 10 to 30 grams of ash, enough for a tiny keepsake urn or an ashes-in-glass charm.
If you choose private, ask how the provider keeps track of an animal that fits in the palm of your hand. Two black-eyed white mice look identical once they've left home. A good answer involves a numbered tag or card that stays with your pet from collection to return. When the pet belongs to a classroom
Classroom pets raise questions a household pet doesn't: who can authorize aftercare, whether parents should be told first, and who takes the ashes home over summer. Children benefit from being included. In an RSPCA pet-loss survey, 93.4%[4] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss. Rodents sit in the lowest price band. CareCredit lists US private cremation at $100 to $175[5] for pets up to 30 lb, and some providers set a lower price for very small animals; one Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from €150[6] for pets under 2 kg. Can you cremate a hamster or mouse?
Yes. Many pet crematories accept hamsters, mice, gerbils and rats, either individually or communally. Because the body is so small, ask how much ash to expect and how the provider keeps tiny pets identified during private cremation.
How much ash comes back from a hamster?
Very little. Remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[8], so a 150 g Syrian hamster might return a few grams, around a teaspoon. Choose a keepsake sized for that amount, and ask the provider plainly what they expect to return.
Is the rodent aftercare quiz private?
Yes. Your choices stay in the open page and aren't sent anywhere. Copying them or opening the email draft is up to you, and the draft only sends if you press send in your own email app.
What should I do with my rat's cage mates?
Rats and some other rodents notice when a companion is missing. Many owners let the cage mates sniff the body briefly before it leaves. Watch the survivors for loneliness or illness, and talk to your vet if the death was sudden.
Is home burial okay for a small rodent?
Often, yes, depending on local rules and whether your pet was euthanized. Bury deep enough that wildlife can't reach the body, away from water and vegetable beds. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you take your pet's ashes with you.
