Why your location changes what's possible for a small pet
Three things shift from place to place: whether you're allowed to bury a pet at home, how far the nearest crematorium is, and whether anyone publishes a price for a pet under a pound. In a big city you may have several crematoria within reach but no garden. In the countryside you'll have space to dig, but the nearest crematorium could be an hour away.

Rodent aftercare across US states and cities
About 6 million[2] US households keep small animals, according to the American Pet Products Association, so most towns have at least one vet who deals with hamster and rat losses regularly. Pet cremation is lightly regulated: one directory counts only 9 states[3] with pet-crematory-specific licensing or consumer laws. That makes it more important to ask about trays, private handling and paperwork yourself.
Prices follow local living costs. Bank of America card data shows the gap clearly: Seattle >30% above US average[4] for pet store and pet care spending in early 2025, with several southern and midwestern metros below it. Home burial is usually allowed on your own property, but city ordinances, HOA rules and rental agreements can say otherwise. Check before you dig, and consider a deep planter burial if you're unsure.
UK and Ireland
Hamster cremation and burial in the UK and Ireland
Small pets can generally be buried in your own garden in England, though farm animals can't. UK cremation prices run from GBP 50 to GBP 300+[5], and the bottom of that range is communal cremation of a small pet. Following a Competition and Markets Authority review, vet practices in the UK must now offer a communal option and set out their prices, which should make it easier to see what a hamster will cost.
In Ireland, one provider publishes private cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg, which covers every rodent on this site. Wherever you are, ask whether the smallest band is really the lowest they'll go for a mouse or gerbil.
Canada, Australia and New Zealand

These bands are built around cats and small dogs, so a rat or hamster is charged as if it weighed several kilograms. Australia's national median shows how high that can be, while only about 3%[6] of Australian households, per Animal Medicines Australia's pet survey, keep small mammals at all, so few providers see enough rodents to set a separate price. Ask anyway; some will quote lower for a pocket pet.

Burial rules in Europe, Japan and the Gulf
- Germany: pet burial at home comes with a min 50 cm soil[7] rule and isn't allowed in water- or nature-protection areas.
- Japan: burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal. Small-pet cremation in Tokyo starts from about JPY 14,300 communal.
- United Arab Emirates: Dubai does not permit animal burial at all; municipal disposal means communal cremation with no ashes back.
If you've recently moved countries, don't assume the rules from home still apply. A quick call to a local vet usually settles it. Questions people ask
Can I bury my hamster if I live in an apartment?
Not in shared grounds without permission, and never in a public park. A deep planter on your balcony or windowsill is a respectful alternative that moves with you. If that isn't practical, communal cremation through a local vet or crematorium is usually the simplest option.
Is there a crematorium that only does small pets?
It's rare. Most pet crematoria handle every size and simply have a smallest weight band. What matters more is whether they use a tray for tiny bodies and will quote a small-animal price. Our local pages list the provider types we know of in each area.
Why are rodent cremation prices so different between countries?
Prices follow local wages, energy costs, rules and competition, and most providers set their lowest band around cats and small dogs. That's why a hamster might cost about the same as a 5 kg pet in one country and noticeably less in another. Always ask for a written quote.
Can I take my pet's ashes with me if I move abroad?
Generally yes. Cremated remains aren't a biohazard, and a tiny sealed vial is easy to carry. Keep the cremation certificate with it if you have one, and check the airline's and destination country's current rules before you travel, since requirements differ.
