About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Small-pet aftercare has moved the same way, but more slowly: many families still bury hamsters and rats at home, and cremation is chosen mostly by renters, city dwellers and people who expect to move.

Europe keeps about 24.7 million[2] pet small mammals, a group that includes hamsters, rats and degus, so crematoria around Spain see rodents regularly even if they don't advertise for them. Ask for the lowest weight band in writing, and check whether VAT and a basic container are already in the quoted price.

Local rules for small-pet burial in Spain
Rodents are too small to trigger most of the rules written for livestock and larger pets, so aftercare in Spain is mostly a matter of good sense. The points that do apply are who owns the ground, whether your pet was euthanized and whether any illness could spread. The local burial and scattering notes for Spain follow.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Spain
- Breathe. A pet this small doesn't need any urgent calls. Wrap them in a paper towel or soft cloth and place them in a small box.
- Talk to the children using the real word, died, rather than saying the pet went to sleep. Invite them to pick the box or to make a drawing to tuck in beside their friend.
- Decide where your pet will rest. A crematorium that covers Spain, a tall planter, or a spot in your own garden.
- If burying, dig deeper than feels necessary and put a flat stone or slab over the spot so foxes, cats and dogs can't dig.
- If cremating, ring one or two providers, then request the price by email with the words private or communal on it and any container charge spelled out.
- Drop your pet off yourself where possible, in a box with a liner; most providers charge extra to collect.
- Plan a small ritual, and five minutes is enough: say something, add a bloom, and tuck a treat they loved next to them.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
Freeze-drying is sometimes offered for small pets, and it does keep a rat or hamster looking as they did. It's slow and expensive: one industry report says small pets typically take three to six months,[7] and one UK guide puts hamster freeze-drying at £300 to £500.[8] Most Spain families choose a photo, a paw print or a tiny vial instead, but it's a real option if it matters to you.

How do I find a vet who sees rats and hamsters in Spain?
Look for exotics or small-animal clinics, especially in larger places like Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. If your own vet doesn't, they can usually refer you, and that vet will often know which crematorium handles tiny pets with care.
Can two rats who died close together be cremated together?
Yes. Ask for them to be cremated together and returned in one container, or for two private cremations with separate vials. Put your choice in writing and ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
Can I bury a hamster or rat at home in Spain?
Usually, if you own the land. Bury deep, wrapped in something biodegradable, away from water, with a stone on top so animals can't dig. Renters should ask the landlord or use a deep planter. City rules, homeowner associations and leases can be stricter than the general rules.
Is private cremation worth it for a mouse or hamster in Spain?
It's worth it if you want a keepsake, can't bury, or might move. It returns only a pinch to a tablespoon of ash, and can cost several times what the pet did. Communal cremation or a careful home burial are equally respectful choices. Ask any provider whether they use a small tray for tiny pets.
Where can I scatter a small pet's ashes in Spain?
Private land with permission is simplest. Parks and public spaces often have their own rules. With a pet this small, many families scatter a pinch under a plant in their garden or a planter, and keep a little back in a keepsake vial.
Do vets in Spain charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
