Saying goodbye to a hamster, rat or mouse, without being oversold
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of just 1.75 years[1], so many families face this sooner and more often than they expect. Here's how burial, communal and private cremation compare for a pet that weighs a few ounces.

If you've just found them
First, make sure your hamster isn't just in torpor
Hamsters, and occasionally other small rodents, can drop into a deep, cold sleep called torpor when a room gets chilly. The Merck Veterinary Manual's hamster section notes that Syrian hamsters can hibernate once temperatures drop below about 41°F (5°C). Breathing slows so much you can barely see it, and the body can feel cool and stiff. If the room was cold overnight and there's no obvious injury, move your hamster somewhere warm, hold them in your hands or wrap them loosely in a towel, and watch closely for a few hours before assuming the worst. If you're sure they've died, you have time. Place your pet in a small cardboard box or tissue-lined container, with their favorite bedding if you like, and keep it somewhere cool and out of reach of other animals. A body this small changes faster than a dog's in a warm room, so if cremation is a day or two away, many vets suggest wrapping the box and keeping it in the fridge. Never the freezer unless your provider asks for it.
Then comes the real question: do you want to bury your pet, or would you rather have a small amount of ashes to keep? For a pet this size, both are reasonable, and neither is "doing it wrong".
The main decision
Home burial or cremation for a pet that weighs a few ounces
Most small rodents are buried at home, and that's a perfectly good choice if you own the garden and plan to stay. In one US survey of owners' preferred future aftercare, the answers came out at 40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[2]. With a hamster the case for burial is even stronger: it costs nothing and it happens today, with the family there.
- Dig deeper than feels necessary. Foxes, cats and dogs can smell a shallow grave. Aim for at least two to three feet, then lay a flat stone or paving slab over the spot.
- Use something that breaks down. A cardboard box, a cotton pillowcase or plain paper. Avoid plastic tubs and sealed tins.
- Keep away from water. Don't bury near a well, stream, pond or vegetable bed.
- Renters and flat-dwellers: ask your landlord first, or use a large, deep planter you can take with you. Parks and public land are off-limits almost everywhere.
Cremation makes more sense if you rent, if your ground is frozen or rocky, if you'd like to keep your pet close when you move, or if a child wants something to hold. What cremating a hamster or rat actually costs
Here's the honest part: very few crematoria publish a price just for pocket pets. Most put a hamster in their smallest weight band, which may cover anything up to a small dog. That's why a private cremation for a 100-gram hamster can cost several times what the hamster did. Some providers do have a lower small-animal rate, so it's always worth asking.

The US band above is from CareCredit's national guide, which lists communal $45-75; private $100-175[4] for pets up to 30 lb. An Irish provider lists private cremation at EUR 150 / EUR 250[5] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively, the closest published match we've found to rodent sizes. Set expectations early
How much ash comes back from a tiny pet
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[6]. For a rodent, that's a very small amount, and with the tiniest pets some of the fine bone can be hard to recover from a large chamber. A careful provider will use a small tray and tell you honestly what to expect before you pay.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual's rat profile, pet rats live 1.5-3 years[7] and weigh 350-650 g as adults, while gerbils live 2-3 years[8] and weigh a fraction of that. The ashes weight estimator works it out from your own pet's weight. A tiny vial or keepsake urn is enough; you don't need a full-size pet urn.

When a child is losing their first pet
Hamsters and mice are often a child's first pet, which makes them a child's first experience of death. Parents clearly feel unprepared: in an RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss. Use plain words like "died" rather than "went to sleep", which can make bedtime frightening.
Let your child help: choosing a box, drawing a picture to go with their pet, picking a spot in the garden or a plant for the grave. A small ritual gives the sadness somewhere to go. Why a short life doesn't mean a small grief
Rat and hamster keepers go through loss far more often than dog or cat owners. Working from the VetCompass study of UK pet hamsters and matching cat data, by our estimate an average UK cat lives about 6.7x[10] as long as an average pet hamster. That means some people lose five or six companions in the time a cat owner loses one, and each goodbye is real.
A pet that fits in your hand can still leave a hole in your whole day.

Can you cremate a hamster?
Yes. Most pet crematoria will cremate a hamster, either communally or privately. Ask whether they place very small pets on a separate tray during a private cremation, because that's what makes it possible to return a meaningful amount of ash. Expect only a teaspoon or so from a Syrian hamster, and less from a dwarf.
How much does it cost to cremate a rat?
In the US, a rat usually falls into the smallest weight band. CareCredit lists that band as communal $45-75; private $100-175[4] for pets up to 30 lb. Some providers charge less for pocket pets, and communal cremation is cheaper still. Collection from your home, a decorative urn and a certificate may be extra, so ask for the full price in writing.
Is it OK to bury a hamster in the garden?
In most places, yes, if you own the land. Bury your hamster at least two to three feet deep in something biodegradable, away from water and vegetable beds, and put a stone on top so animals don't dig. If your hamster was euthanized, the drugs can harm wildlife, so a deep grave or cremation matters even more.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse?
Possibly only a pinch. A mouse weighs about 20 to 30 grams, and at three to five percent of body weight that's well under two grams of remains. Some providers are more careful than others with pets this small, so ask directly what they expect to return before choosing a private cremation.
How long can I keep my dead hamster before burying or cremating?
In a cool room, a few hours is fine for a goodbye. If you need longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives you a day or two. Tell your provider if you plan to freeze your pet, since some prefer that you don't.
Are rabbits and guinea pigs covered here?
