What will cremating your hamster or rat cost?
Most price lists start at a band built for cats and small dogs, such as communal $45-75; private $100-175[1] for pets up to 30 lb in the US. This calculator shows that range for your country, then helps you spot where a tiny pet can cost less.
- Starts at a rodent weight of half a pound
- Communal and private side by side

Using the calculator
Five quick choices, one price range
- Type of animal: leave it on Hamster, rat or other rodent, or pick the closest match.
- Weight: it defaults to 0.5 lb (about 225 g). Change it if you know your pet's weight; a kitchen scale is fine.
- Type: communal (no ashes back), partitioned, private or witnessed.
- Country: the US, UK, Canada, Australia or somewhere else, which shows US prices in dollars as a guide.
- Extras: home or vet pickup, after-hours or weekend service, a paw print keepsake, an upgraded urn or at-home euthanasia.
The result updates as you go and shows a low and high figure, a line-by-line table and a private-versus-communal comparison. There's no submit button and nothing you enter is sent anywhere, so try different combinations freely.

Where the calculator's price bands come from
For the US, the base price comes from CareCredit's national pet cremation guide, whose smallest band covers pets up to 30 lb. Other published US ranges are broader: Embrace Pet Insurance lists communal $30-200; private $100-500+[2], and PetMD puts the starting points at communal $50+; private $100+[3]. UK figures come from the Competition and Markets Authority's review of pet cremation pricing, which found communal cremation 2x to 5x cheaper[4] than individual for the same weight.
Extras use typical add-on ranges rather than any one provider's list: $50-150 for collection, $75-200 for after-hours, $25-75 for a paw print and $50-300 for an upgraded urn. For a rodent, most of these are optional, which is where the biggest savings are.
Worked example
A Syrian hamster in the US, three ways
Take a Syrian hamster weighing 150 grams, about a third of a pound. Here's how the calculator's figures change with the choices you make:
| Choice | Low | High | What you get back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Communal, dropped off yourself | $45 | $75 | Nothing; ashes scattered by the provider |
| Private, dropped off, basic container | $100 | $175 | About 4.5-7.5 g of ash in a simple pouch or box |
| Private, home collection, paw print | $175 | $400 | The same ash, a paw print and no car trip |
By our estimate, across eight markets private cremation costs a median of ~2.0x[5] the communal price, so the jump from row one to row two is typical. The jump to row three comes entirely from extras. With a pet this small, driving them over yourself in a lined box and taking a paw print at home can save more than the cremation costs.

What the result means
How to use your range when you call a provider
Treat the top of the range as the most you should expect to pay for what you selected, and the bottom as what a straightforward provider might charge at the published band. If a quote lands above the high figure, ask what's included. If it lands below, that's likely a small-animal rate, and good news.
- "Do you have a price for pets under one pound?"
- "Is the container included, and can I bring my own vial?"
- "Can I drop my pet off myself to avoid a collection fee?"
- "Is that total in writing, including tax?"

Being honest
What this cost estimate can't tell you
It can't see local prices, which vary with city costs, competition and whether the provider bothers to price small pets separately. In the UK, the CMA's final report requires vet practices to offer a communal option and set out their prices, so ask to see the list. Our local pages note what we know about your area. It can't tell you whether a private cremation will return a meaningful amount of ash for a mouse, which depends on the provider's trays and care; the ashes weight estimator gives you the likely amount. And it doesn't include euthanasia unless you tick that extra.
Insurance rarely helps here. Embrace's summary is blunt: Euthanasia covered if medically necessary; cremation not covered by standard policy[6]. Many policies don't cover pet rodents in the first place. Outside the US, Irish and UK figures give a feel for the smallest bands, such as one Irish provider's private price of EUR 150 / EUR 250[7] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg.

From a price range to a real quote
If the range feels too high for what comes back, that's worth listening to. Garden or planter burial costs nothing and is a loving choice for a rodent; see every aftercare option or our guide on how to bury a hamster. If you'd still like ashes, the memorial budget planner adds a vial or frame so the whole cost is clear.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to cremate a hamster?
Published bands put private cremation at roughly $100-175 in the US for pets up to 30 lb, and communal at $45-75. A hamster sits at the very bottom of that band, and some providers offer a lower small-animal rate. Skipping home collection and a decorative urn keeps the total close to the base price.
Is communal cremation worth it for a mouse?
For many owners, yes. A private cremation for a mouse may return under two grams of ash, so communal cremation often makes more sense if you'd like cremation rather than burial but don't need anything back. It's usually about half the cost of private, or less.
Why does the calculator default to half a pound?
Half a pound, about 225 grams, sits between a Syrian hamster and a small adult rat, so it's a reasonable starting point for most rodents on this site. Change it to your pet's actual weight if you know it. The price rarely changes within rodent weights, but the figure in the ashes weight estimator does.
Does pet insurance pay for rodent cremation?
Rarely. Standard policies typically exclude cremation, and many insurers don't cover rats, hamsters or mice at all. Some US add-ons help, such as Figo's Extra Care Pack (up to $250; $6.62/month[8]) toward cremation and burial, but those are mainly sold for dogs and cats. Check your own policy wording.
Can I reduce the cost without choosing communal?
Yes. Ask for a small-animal price, drop your pet off yourself, decline the decorative urn and bring your own tiny vial or pouch. Take a paw print at home with a little washable paint instead of paying for one. Those four steps often bring private cremation close to the base band or below.
