Plan a goodbye for your rodent that fits your budget
Cost weighs on most owners; in one US survey, 61%[1] of owners rated the cost of after-death care as a concern. For a pet this small, a meaningful goodbye can cost very little, and this planner shows exactly where the money goes.

Using the planner
Tick what you want, adjust the amounts, watch the total
The planner lists the things people commonly pay for after a pet dies: cremation, a vet visit or euthanasia, collection, an urn, jewelry, a memorial stone, a paw print, a small service and a tree or plant. Private cremation and an urn start ticked; tick anything else you want and untick what you don't. Each ticked line has an editable low and high amount, so you can type in a quote you've been given.
The running total shows a low-to-high range. When you're done, copy or print the summary to share with a partner, or to take with you when you speak to a provider.
How it calculates
Where the starting amounts come from
Cremation starts from published price bands, such as CareCredit's US range of communal $45-75; private $100-175[2] for pets up to 30 lb. Add-ons use typical ranges rather than one provider's list: pickup or transport $50-150, a paw print $25-75 and an urn $50-300. Paw prints tend to sit near the bottom of that band: by our estimate, the median paw-print add-on at US crematories is ~$32[3]. The rest, from jewelry to a memorial tree, start at modest defaults you can change.
Prices for pet services have been climbing (+42% since 2019; +4.6% YoY[4] in the US, as of April 2025), so older quotes you remember may be out of date. Use the cremation cost calculator for a fresh range by country.
Worked examples
Three budgets for a pet hamster
| Plan | In the planner | Likely total |
|---|---|---|
| Garden goodbye | Home burial has no line, so untick everything, or type a few dollars into the stone line for paint | Close to $0, plus a few dollars for paint or a frame |
| Simple cremation | Private cremation line only, with a communal quote typed over it; urn unticked, dropped off yourself | $45-75 |
| Keepsake plan | Private cremation, paw print keepsake and urn lines ticked at their starting amounts | $175-550 |
The jump from the second row to the third is almost entirely extras. For a 150-gram hamster, which returns about a teaspoon of ash, an upgraded urn adds cost without adding much. Swapping it for a small vial and doing the paw print at home brings the keepsake plan close to the base private band.

More than one pet
Budgeting for cage mates and repeat losses
Rat, mouse and gerbil keepers often lose two companions within weeks, and hamster owners may face this every couple of years. The planner has one cremation line and you can't add another, so enter the combined cost for both pets on it, and ask the provider about a same-day or second-pet price. For repeat losses, some families settle on a consistent approach, such as a planter burial for each pet, so it doesn't become a financial decision every time.

Shared pets
Budgeting for a classroom or club pet
When a class hamster or a club's rats die, the question of who pays can feel awkward. Many teachers keep it simple: a burial in the school garden where rules allow, or a communal cremation arranged through the school's usual vet, with the class making cards or a painted stone instead of buying anything.
If families want a keepsake, the planner can total a private cremation and a small vial, so everyone can see the figure and agree how to divide it before anyone pays. Check your school's policy on animals and on asking parents for money first, and make sure children wash their hands after handling the pet or its bedding, as the CDC advises for small mammals. The classroom goodbye guide covers the rest.
Being honest
What the budget planner can't know
It doesn't know your local prices, what your vet charges for euthanizing a small mammal, or whether a nearby crematorium has a pocket-pet rate. It also can't tell you whether insurance will help; in the UK, for example, Petplan's position is: Euthanasia covered; cremation/burial not covered[5]. US standard policies typically exclude cremation too. Treat the total as a planning figure until you have a written quote; our local pages note where prices run higher.
Many people aren't given prices at all: in the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority found that only 52%[6] of cremation buyers remembered receiving price information. Asking for a written total, including tax and any container, is the easiest way to close that gap. Our guide to comparing rodent cremation quotes shows what to ask.

Questions people ask
How much should I budget for a hamster's aftercare?
Anywhere from nothing to a couple of hundred dollars. A garden or planter burial costs almost nothing; communal cremation usually sits in the lowest published band; private cremation with a simple container is more. Extras such as collection and decorative urns are where costs climb, and most are optional for a pet this small.
Is it wrong to choose the cheapest option?
Not at all. How much you spend has nothing to do with how much you loved your pet. For a rodent, the least expensive options, burial at home or communal cremation, are often the most sensible. Spend on what feels meaningful to you, whether that's a photo frame or a vial.
Does the planner include euthanasia costs?
It includes two lines you can tick and edit, one for the clinic and one for a home visit. Their starting amounts are US ranges for dogs, and a vet's fee for a small mammal is often different, so we suggest typing in the figure your vet quotes. Some practices bundle euthanasia and communal cremation for small pets, which can simplify things.
Can I save or share my budget?
Yes. Use the copy or print option at the end to keep a summary. Nothing is stored on our side, so if you close the page without copying, the figures will be gone. Sharing the printout with family can help everyone agree before anyone calls a provider.
