Calculators built for pets that weigh a few ounces

Most aftercare tools assume a dog. Ours start at half a pound and use published rules, like ash weighing about 3-5% of body weight[1], so the answers make sense for a hamster, rat or mouse.

Calculators built for pets that weigh a few ounces

Why we built these

Why a tiny pet needs its own set of calculators

Put "0.3 lb" into a typical pet cremation calculator and you'll often get a nonsense answer, or a price for a small dog. That's not much help when your Syrian hamster weighed about 150 grams. Every tool on this page starts from rodent-sized defaults and tells you where its numbers come from.

Each one runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent to us, so you can experiment freely. Our local pages add area-specific notes once you have a figure. When you want actual local prices rather than ranges, send us your details instead.

What will it cost?

Cremation cost calculator: a price range before you call

Choose your country, communal or private cremation, and any extras like collection or a paw print (by our estimate, paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of ~$32[2]). The calculator returns a low-to-high range using published price bands, such as CareCredit's US figures of communal $45-75; private $100-175[3] for pets up to 30 lb. Treat the result as a ceiling: if a provider has a separate small-animal rate, a rodent may cost less. By our estimate, private cremation costs ~2.0x[4] the communal price at the median across eight markets, which is why the calculator shows both side by side. The full cost calculator page explains each line.

How much comes back?

Ashes weight estimator: grams, not pounds

This is the tool most rodent owners find most useful, because it resets expectations before you pay for anything. Enter your pet's weight and it applies the 3-5% rule (in line with a study of 100 cremations where remains averaged about 3.5% of body weight) to show a range in grams, with a teaspoon comparison. A pet rat, which weighs 350-650 g and lives 1.5-3 years[5] according to the Merck Veterinary Manual, typically leaves between 10 and 33 grams. Read how the estimate works.

What size keepsake?

Urn size calculator: avoid buying ten times too much space

Pet urns are sold in cubic inches, and even "small" ones often hold 20 cubic inches, enough for a 20 lb cat. A hamster needs well under one. The urn size calculator converts weight to volume, adds a safety margin and suggests a vial or mini urn instead of a standard size. One industry report puts personalized urns at roughly USD 50–1,000+[6], so sizing correctly can save real money.

Which option suits you?

Aftercare options compared, weighted by what matters to you

Slide your priorities, such as cost, keeping ashes, speed, ceremony and environmental impact, and the tool ranks garden burial, communal, private and water cremation for you. For many rodent owners, burial comes out on top, and that's a fair result; our services page explains each option in more depth. US owners asked about their preferred future aftercare answered like this: 40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[7].

Is my pet old?

Pet age calculator: how old is old for a hamster?

A two-year-old hamster is elderly. UK hamsters have a median age at death of 1.75 years[8] in a large study of vet records, and a year-old rat is already middle-aged. The age calculator shows where your pet sits in its life stage and offers a gentle prompt about planning ahead. See the pet age calculator page for the lifespans it uses.

Sharing and budgeting

Sharing ashes and planning a small memorial budget

The ashes sharing planner shows whether a rat's ashes can stretch to a pendant for each child and a vial for you. With a mouse the honest answer is usually one keepsake, and the tool says so. Our keepsakes and jewelry guide lists pieces that suit a pinch of ash. The memorial budget planner adds up cremation, a vial, a photo frame or a plant so the total holds no surprises.

Putting them together

A worked example: planning for an elderly fancy rat

Say your rat is two and a half, has slowed down and weighs 480 grams on the kitchen scale. The age calculator places her firmly in old age, which is a gentle nudge to think about aftercare while there's no rush. You decide you'd like her ashes back, because you rent and can't bury her.

  1. The ashes weight estimator gives roughly 14-24 grams, about a heaped tablespoon.
  2. The urn size calculator suggests a mini urn or large vial of around one cubic inch, not a standard pet urn.
  3. The sharing planner shows that amount could fill a main vial plus a couple of small pendants.
  4. The cost calculator gives the US private band as a ceiling, and the budget planner adds the vial and a photo frame to show your likely total.

With those figures in hand, one call to a provider is much quicker: you know what to ask for, what container size to request and roughly what to expect on the bill. If you'd like us to find the providers, ask through the contact form.

Questions people ask

Are these calculators accurate for a mouse or dwarf hamster?

They're as accurate as the published rules allow, which means they give ranges, not exact figures. For the very smallest pets, the ash amount can be so tiny that recovery depends on the provider's care. Treat the result as a guide for your conversation, and ask the provider what they expect.

Do I need to weigh my pet?

It helps but isn't essential. A kitchen scale in grams is ideal. If you can't or would rather not, use typical adult weights instead: roughly 25-50 g for a dwarf hamster, 100-180 g for a Syrian and 350-650 g for a rat. That's close enough for a price or urn estimate.

Is anything I enter stored?

No. The tools run entirely in your browser and don't send what you type to us or anyone else. If you want us to look for local prices, you'll need to use the separate contact form and choose what to share.

Why do the cost results look high for such a small pet?

Because most crematoria price by weight band, and the lowest band usually starts around cat or small-dog size. Our calculator shows the published band, and a small-animal rate, where one exists, may be lower. Asking for that rate directly is the easiest way to bring the price down.

Which tool should I start with?

If your pet has just died, start with the ashes weight estimator. It tells you how much would come back from a private cremation, which is often the deciding factor between cremation and home burial for a pet this small. If your pet is still with you, the age calculator is a gentler place to begin.
