Caring for your rat, hamster or gerbil in Barcelona after they die
Most price lists in Barcelona start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.

Hamster and rat goodbyes in Barcelona: the local picture
Barcelona summers are hot and humid, and flats without air conditioning can become very warm. If your pet dies at home in July or August, move them to the coolest room and place cool packs wrapped in towels beneath them. Winters are mild, so there is usually a little more time then. Garden burial is rarely an option in a city this dense, which is one reason cremation is the most common choice.
Many Barcelona pets spent their lives on balconies and terraces, in sunny flats or in the courtyards at the heart of the Eixample blocks, and those small spaces often shape how owners want to remember them. An individual cremation with ashes returned gives you the most options: keeping the ashes at home, scattering part of them somewhere meaningful, or dividing them among family.
When a rat or hamster declines at night in Barcelona, the nearest open clinic is usually an emergency hospital rather than an exotics practice. Emergency teams can give a calm euthanasia to a small rodent even if they rarely treat one; ask whether the vet on shift is comfortable sedating a pet this size first. Afterwards you're free to take your pet home and compare aftercare in the morning.
Barcelona's population is around 1,620,000.
If you want to compare providers, look at Palma de Mallorca (128 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
50.11%[1]
In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).
1.75 years[2]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and O'Neill et al. 2022, Journal of Small Animal Practice.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Cremation accounts for about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain, so families here often have relatives on both sides of the burial-or-cremation question. If grandparents want to bury the family hamster and a teenager wants ashes, you can do both: cremate privately, then bury the small container or scatter the ash in the garden later.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Barcelona tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Barcelona
Seasons in Barcelona shape the ceremony more than the logistics. A pet this small can be cooled and kept safely for a day or two whatever the weather, so pick a moment when the family can be together and the ground, or the planter, is ready.

Rodent aftercare prices near Barcelona, honestly compared
Across Europe, garden burial of small pets on your own land is widely allowed with conditions, and many families in Barcelona choose it for rodents. If you rent or live in a flat, cremation is the portable alternative. The table shows the closest published small-pet prices from several countries.

Local rules for small-pet burial in Catalonia
A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in Catalonia, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. The general burial and scattering rules follow.
The first day, one step at a time
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, have them settle the body into a lined box, seal that inside a bag and keep it refrigerated.
- Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup if the death was unexpected; heat, drafts or a jammed water bottle are worth ruling out.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, even if the body has already gone: scattering ashes, planting something or looking through photos together.
Remembering your little one in Barcelona
Most Barcelona pets live in apartments, from the grid of the Eixample to the narrow streets of the old town, where vehicles cannot always get close to the door. Pet aftercare providers in the Barcelona area generally collect from a flat or from the vet's clinic; tell them the floor, whether the building has a lift and whether a van can stop outside. Services commonly work in Catalan and Spanish.

Questions people ask
Why does the Barcelona page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Barcelona?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Barcelona provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
Is it legal to bury a hamster in my garden in Spain?
In most European countries, burying a small animal on property you own is allowed with conditions: away from water sources, outside protected zones and not if the animal had a notifiable disease. Details differ by country and sometimes by municipality, so check with your town hall or council. If you're renting or in an apartment in Barcelona, individual or collective cremation through your vet is the usual route.
