In Switzerland, roughly 90%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already understand the difference between private and communal. For a rodent, that difference matters more than usual: a private cremation may return only a teaspoon of ash, while communal returns nothing at all but costs far less. Both are dignified.

In Switzerland, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. Rules worth knowing before you dig in Switzerland
Cremating a hamster or rat needs no permit anywhere we cover. The rules that matter for small pets are about burial and scattering: whether you can bury in your own garden, how deep, and how far from water. Here's what applies in Switzerland.
The first day, one step at a time
- Breathe. Nobody needs phoning straight away for an animal this size. Fold a soft cloth or a sheet of paper towel around them and settle them into a little box.
- Talk to the children in plain words: say your pet has died, not that they went to sleep. Let them help choose the box or draw a picture to go inside.
- Decide where your pet will rest. Your own garden, a deep planter, or a crematorium serving Switzerland.
- If burying, dig deeper than feels necessary, then weigh the grave down with a paving slab or flat rock so dogs, cats and foxes can't dig.
- If cremating, ring one or two providers, then request the price by email with the words private or communal on it and any container charge spelled out.
- Drop your pet off yourself where possible, in a box with a liner; most providers charge extra to collect.
- Plan a small ritual, even five minutes: a few words, a flower, a favorite treat placed beside them.
Remembering your little one in Switzerland
Freeze-drying is sometimes offered for small pets, and it does keep a rat or hamster looking as they did. It's slow and expensive: one industry report says small pets typically take three to six months,[7] and one UK guide puts hamster freeze-drying at £300 to £500.[8] Most Switzerland families choose a photo, a paw print or a tiny vial instead, but it's a real option if it matters to you.

Can I bury a hamster or rat at home in Switzerland?
Usually, if you own the land. Bury deep, wrapped in something biodegradable, away from water, with a stone on top so animals can't dig. Renters should ask the landlord or use a deep planter. City rules, homeowner associations and leases can be stricter than the general rules.
Is private cremation worth it for a mouse or hamster in Switzerland?
It's worth it if you want a keepsake, can't bury, or might move. It returns only a pinch to a tablespoon of ash, and can cost several times what the pet did. Communal cremation or a careful home burial are equally respectful choices. Ask any provider whether they use a small tray for tiny pets.

Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in Switzerland?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds.
