Cremation habits in Switzerland, and what they mean for a hamster
Cremation is the norm for people in Switzerland: about 90%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.
We take the Switzerland rate from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Kusnacht, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How Kusnacht's weather shapes the first day

For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.

- Take a photo or a clipping from their coat, and hold on to the wheel, hammock or hideout they loved if that feels right.
- Wrap your pet in a material that will rot away, such as cotton, paper or a little cardboard box, rather than a plastic container.
- Keep them in the fridge when you can't bury or hand them over within the next few hours, and check with the provider before using the freezer.
- If renting, choose a planter: the deepest, widest pot you can find, your pet low down, compost on top and a plant that means something to you.

Where are the providers that serve Kusnacht actually based?

If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
Will my vet in Kusnacht keep my rat until the crematorium collects?
Most practices that offer cremation have a freezer or cold store for exactly this, and small pets wait there for the next collection, which in smaller towns may run weekly.
