Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Switzerland and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
Your checklist for a small pet in Lucerne
- If an escaped rat, mouse or hamster is found dead in the house, wear gloves, lift them in a cloth and lay them in a shoebox.
- Think about poison. Where rodent bait might have been within reach, let your vet know and steer other pets clear of the area.
- Skip the home grave if bait is possible. A poisoned body can harm a dog, cat or owl that digs it up, so cremation is the safer route.
