Saying goodbye to a hamster, rat or mouse in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

What rodent aftercare in Rio de Janeiro is really like

Summers in Rio are hot and humid, and heavy storms can flood streets and cause landslides on the hillsides, especially from December to March. In that heat, a pet's body needs cooling within a few hours, so use ice packs wrapped in a towel near the belly and back and keep the room as cool as possible. Traffic through the tunnels between zones can be slow, so plan collection times with that in mind.

Rio is squeezed between mountains and sea, and the way you live depends on where: apartment towers in the South Zone, houses and older buildings in the North Zone, gated condominiums in Barra da Tijuca, and hillside communities with steps instead of streets. Tell any provider exactly where your pet is, including stairs, lifts and whether a car can reach the door, because collection in Rio is often shaped by access rather than distance.

Grief for a pocket pet can feel lonely in a busy place like Rio de Janeiro, where coworkers may not understand why a hamster mattered. You're not alone in that: in a UK survey by the RSPCA, 57.1%[1] of bereaved owners felt they had to hide their grief. Our grief guide covers what helps, and nobody should feel silly crying over a 120-gram friend.

With roughly 6,748,000 residents, Rio de Janeiro is one of the Brazil communities we cover.

9%[2]

Only about 8-9% of people who die in Brazil are cremated, according to Brazil's private cemetery and crematoria union (Sincep).

1.75 years[3]

Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.

1.5-3 years[4]

Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.

3-5% of body weight[5]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and O'Neill et al. 2022, Journal of Small Animal Practice, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial

With cremation at about 9%[2] in Brazil, many families here have land and a habit of burying animals on it. That habit works for rodents too, with one caution: if your pet was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body, so choose a spot where no dog, raccoon or bird of prey is likely to dig, and weigh it down well.

The Brazil percentage above is from Exame, citing Sincep (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Rio de Janeiro, not as a count of pets.

Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Rio de Janeiro

Cold rooms can put hamsters into torpor, a deep sleep that looks a lot like death. Hot rooms can cause heatstroke in rats and hamsters surprisingly quickly. If you're in Rio de Janeiro and unsure, warm a cold hamster gently and watch; if a pet died in the heat, check the cage position for any cage mates still with you.

What rodent cremation costs around Rio de Janeiro

Because services and rules differ from country to country, the first call in Rio de Janeiro is usually to a vet who sees small exotics. They'll know which crematorium, if any, handles tiny pets carefully. The table shows published small-pet prices from elsewhere as a rough guide only.

Before you bury or scatter in Brazil

Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Brazil are below.

Your checklist for a small pet in Rio de Janeiro

  1. Take a moment with a long life. Chinchillas and degus live far longer than hamsters, so this grief may be bigger than you expected.
  2. Weigh your pet on a kitchen scale when one is handy; cremation prices go by weight, and the figure hints at how much ash to expect.
  3. [Estimate the ashes](/tools/ashes-weight-estimator) to see how much a pet of that weight is likely to return.
  4. Ask for private cremation on a small-animal tray when ashes matter to you; rodents this size return enough to fill a small urn.
  5. Watch a bonded companion closely. Chinchillas and degus are social, and a surviving partner may need extra time with you, and later perhaps a new friend.
  6. Choose an urn by volume, not species; our urn sizing tool turns a body weight into the cubic inches you need.

Remembering your little one in Rio de Janeiro

Life in Rio happens outdoors, and many owners picture their pet's last place as somewhere they enjoyed together: a stretch of beach, the forested slopes of Tijuca, or the shore of the Lagoa. If scattering ashes is part of your plan, a private cremation is the way to make sure the ashes you receive are your pet's alone. Ask about any rules for the place you have in mind, particularly on protected land.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Brazil?

For people, yes: about 9%[2] of Brazil deaths end in cremation, according to Exame, citing Sincep (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rio de Janeiro follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?

A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.

Can I be there when my hamster is cremated?

Some crematoria offer an attended or witnessed cremation, even for small pets. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. For a pocket pet, many providers can fit it in fairly easily because the cremation itself is short. Ask on your first call to a Rio de Janeiro provider.

Is my hamster dead or in torpor?

In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.

Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?

Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.

Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?

It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
