Rodents are too small to trigger most of the rules written for livestock and larger pets, so aftercare in Brazil is mostly a matter of good sense. The points that do apply are who owns the ground, whether your pet was euthanized and whether any illness could spread. The local burial and scattering notes for Brazil follow.
Your checklist for a small pet in Brazil
- Check for torpor first. If your hamster is cold and stiff after a chilly night, warm them gently in your hands or a towel and watch closely for a few hours.
- Once you're sure, take your time. Lay your pet in a small cardboard box or tissue-lined container with a little of their bedding.
- Let cage mates say goodbye. Rats, mice and gerbils often sniff a companion's body for a few minutes, and many keepers feel it helps them.
- Keep the box cool. A chilly room will do for a few hours; for a day or two, wrap and bag your pet and use the fridge.
- Choose burial or cremation. If the garden is yours, burial costs nothing and can happen today. Communal cremation is cheap, while a private one sends back a pinch of ash to keep.
- If cremating, ask three questions: do they charge a lower rate for small pets, does your pet go on their own tray, and about how much ash should you expect back?
- Clean the cage thoroughly if illness might have been the cause, before any new or surviving pets use it.

What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in Brazil?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
Can I bury a hamster or rat at home in Brazil?
Usually, if you own the land. Bury deep, wrapped in something biodegradable, away from water, with a stone on top so animals can't dig. Renters should ask the landlord or use a deep planter. City rules, homeowner associations and leases can be stricter than the general rules.
