Brasilia, Federal District
Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Brasilia
Families here often want a quiet goodbye that fits a busy week in government offices and commutes from the satellite towns. A private cremation with ashes returned lets you choose the moment later: some people keep them at home, others take them to a favorite green spot, such as the edge of Lake Paranoa or the cerrado land around the city. Ask any provider what a private cremation includes before you agree to it.
Brasilia was planned around cars, with wide axes, residential superblocks of apartment buildings on stilts and satellite towns spread across the Federal District. That layout matters when a pet dies: distances are long, and many families in the superblocks have no garden for a home burial. When you ask for options, say whether you live in the Plano Piloto or a satellite city, and whether your building has a lift, so any collection can be planned properly.
Many Brasilia rodent keepers live in apartments or rented homes with no garden at all. That doesn't rule out a burial. A large, deep planter on a balcony or windowsill, with a small plant on top, works well and moves with you. Shared courtyards and city parks are off-limits, so if a planter isn't practical, communal cremation is the simplest respectful choice.
Brasilia is home to about 3,055,000 people.
9%[1]
Only about 8-9% of people who die in Brazil are cremated, according to Brazil's private cemetery and crematoria union (Sincep).
1.75 years[2]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial, cremation and the Brazil tradition
A family in Brazil that cremates a hamster may get a raised eyebrow from an older relative; only about 9%[1] of people there are cremated. You don't need to defend it. A child who's moving schools, a renter with no yard or a keeper who lost a rat in midwinter all have good reasons, and the choice is yours.
We take the Brazil rate from Exame, citing Sincep (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Brasilia, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Brasilia
Local weather affects two things for a rodent: how quickly you need to cool the body, and whether a burial in the garden is practical. Hard, frozen or waterlogged ground makes a deep grave difficult. In Brasilia, a deep planter or cremation are the easy alternatives when the ground won't cooperate.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
Because services and rules differ from country to country, the first call in Brasilia is usually to a vet who sees small exotics. They'll know which crematorium, if any, handles tiny pets carefully. The table shows published small-pet prices from elsewhere as a rough guide only.
The Federal District price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Federal District allows for a small pet
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[6], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in Federal District. Local burial and scattering rules follow.
Step by step for a small pet in Brasilia
- Take a moment with a long life. Chinchillas and degus live far longer than hamsters, so this grief may be bigger than you expected.
- Weigh your pet on a kitchen scale when one is handy; cremation prices go by weight, and the figure hints at how much ash to expect.
- [Estimate the ashes](/tools/ashes-weight-estimator) and you'll get a rough figure for what comes back from a pet of that size.
- Ask for private cremation on a small-animal tray if you want ashes; for these larger rodents there's enough for a small urn.
- Watch a bonded companion closely. Chinchillas and degus are social, and a surviving partner may need extra time with you, and later perhaps a new friend.
- Choose an urn by volume, not species; our urn sizing tool converts weight into cubic inches.
Ways to mark a short, bright life
The capital sits high on Brazil's central plateau, with a long dry season from roughly May to September when humidity drops very low and days stay warm. Heat still speeds things up, so keep your pet's body cool with ice packs wrapped in a towel and a shaded, ventilated room. From October the rains return with heavy afternoon storms, which can slow travel across the district, so arrange collection early in the day if you can.

Questions people ask
How do Brazil attitudes to cremation compare?
Exame, citing Sincep (2024) puts the Brazil human cremation rate at about 9%[1]. We show it on the Brasilia page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How deep should I bury a hamster or rat in Brasilia?
There's usually no legal minimum for a pet this small, so go by what keeps animals out: deeper than most people expect. Foxes, dogs, cats and raccoons can smell a shallow grave. Wrap your pet in paper or cotton, avoid plastic, and lay a flat stone or paving slab over the spot. Keep away from wells, streams, ponds and vegetable beds.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
Schools usually let the teacher decide, often with parents. A short ceremony and a burial in the school garden, with the head's permission, or communal cremation through a local vet, are the common choices. Our classroom goodbye guide has a simple plan teachers can use in Brasilia or anywhere.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?
A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
Can I send my pet for cremation in Brasilia if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
