Mexico City is vast, and most pets live in apartments, older houses with rooftops, or gated condominiums, with traffic that can turn a short distance into a long trip. Home burial is rarely practical in the city, so cremation is the usual choice. When you ask for options, give your borough and neighborhood, your building access and where a car can stop, so collection can be planned well.
At over 2,200 meters, Mexico City is mild most of the year, with a dry season through winter and spring and a rainy season from about May to October, when afternoon storms can flood streets. Mild air still isn't cold enough to wait long: wrap your pet in a towel, tuck ice packs against the belly and back, and choose a room away from sunny windows while you arrange collection.

Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[3], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
How do I explain a hamster's death to a young child?

Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?
Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Mexico City?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Mexico City provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
