European crematoria almost never list a price for a hamster, but the smallest bands give a guide. Rules worth knowing before you dig in the Netherlands
Nothing in the Netherlands requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
In the Netherlands, burying a small pet in your own garden is widely accepted, though your gemeente may set conditions. Several pet insurers reimburse part of cremation costs, but policies for small rodents are rarer, so check before assuming cover. For individual cremation of a hamster or rat, ask whether the crematorium uses a separate tray for very small animals.
Your checklist for a small pet in the Netherlands
- If your pet died at the vet, you can take them home in a box or ask the practice to arrange cremation. Either is fine; you don't have to choose at the counter.
- If it happened at home, move your pet somewhere cool where the household's dogs and cats, however curious, can't get at them.
- If you're unsure it was a death, a vet with small-exotic experience can confirm it, which brings peace of mind after a sudden loss.
- Choose communal or private. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, communal is often the honest choice; for a rat, private returns a heaped tablespoon or so.
- Ask for the small-pet tray by name if you choose private, and confirm in writing that your pet is cremated alone.
- Buy a keepsake sized for a pinch: a pendant or tiny vial suits the amount better than a standard urn.

Can I bury a hamster or rat at home in the Netherlands?
Usually, if you own the land. Bury deep, wrapped in something biodegradable, away from water, with a stone on top so animals can't dig. Renters should ask the landlord or use a deep planter. City rules, homeowner associations and leases can be stricter than the general rules.
Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in the Netherlands?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds. Many schools prefer communal cremation arranged by a nearby vet, because grounds change and not every family is comfortable with a burial on site. Our plan for classroom goodbyes keeps it simple.
How much does rodent cremation cost in the Netherlands?
Most providers across the Netherlands charge a hamster or rat at their smallest weight band, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than private, and home burial is free. Ask each provider for a written quote, whether a small-pet rate applies and whether a basic container is included.
Is private cremation worth it for a mouse or hamster in the Netherlands?
It's worth it if you want a keepsake, can't bury, or might move. It returns only a pinch to a tablespoon of ash, and can cost several times what the pet did. Communal cremation or a careful home burial are equally respectful choices. Ask any provider whether they use a small tray for tiny pets.

What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in the Netherlands?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
