Saying goodbye to a hamster, rat or mouse in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, North Holland

How families in Amsterdam handle a small pet's death

Amsterdam's narrow canal houses and apartment blocks come with the famously steep Dutch staircases, and many homes have no garden at all; some people live on houseboats. That makes burying a pet at home rarely possible and carrying a body down to the street hard, so home collection is what most owners ask for. When you book, mention the floor, whether there is a lift or a hoist beam, and whether a vehicle can stop on your canal street.

Amsterdam families spend time in the Vondelpark, the Amsterdamse Bos and along the IJ, but most pets in the city live in apartments and on houseboats, and many owners want the ashes back to keep at home. Individual cremation, where your pet is cremated alone and the ashes returned, is widely offered in the Netherlands. Ask for that in writing, since a collective cremation returns no ashes.

Plenty of Amsterdam households don't own a car, and that's fine here. A hamster or mouse fits in a small lined box that travels quietly on a bus or train, so you can hand them to a crematorium or an exotics vet yourself. Phone first: some providers only take drop-offs by appointment, and a few run their small-animal trays on set days rather than every day.

About 872,000 people live in Amsterdam, which makes it the largest of the 2 North Holland communities we cover.

Our pages for Haarlem (11 miles), Utrecht (21 miles) and The Hague (33 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Amsterdam as well.

68.37%[1]

In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).

1.75 years[2]

Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.

1.5-3 years[3]

Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance; we only apply it to this.

A little one at home in Amsterdam

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little

About 68.37%[1] of people in Netherlands are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Small-pet aftercare has moved the same way, but more slowly: many families still bury hamsters and rats at home, and cremation is chosen mostly by renters, city dwellers and people who expect to move.

The Netherlands percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Amsterdam, not as a count of pets.

Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Amsterdam

Whatever Amsterdam's seasons bring, timing only has to fit two things: keeping a tiny body cool, and choosing a moment when the people who loved your pet can be there. A lined box in the fridge gives you that flexibility, so you can wait for a weekend, a sibling coming home from college or simply a calmer day.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Amsterdam

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Amsterdam

Europe keeps about 24.7 million[5] pet small mammals, a group that includes hamsters, rats and degus, so crematoria around Amsterdam see rodents regularly even if they don't advertise for them. Ask for the lowest weight band in writing, and check whether VAT and a basic container are already in the quoted price.

Before you bury or scatter in North Holland

A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in North Holland, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. The general burial and scattering rules follow.

In the Netherlands, burying a small pet in your own garden is widely accepted, though your gemeente may set conditions. Several pet insurers reimburse part of cremation costs, but policies for small rodents are rarer, so check before assuming cover. For individual cremation of a hamster or rat, ask whether the crematorium uses a separate tray for very small animals.

If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died

  1. Book a vet who handles rodents regularly to carry out the euthanasia, and check that they sedate small pets beforehand, as most practices do.
  2. Decide on aftercare before the day so you aren't choosing at the counter: home burial, communal, or private cremation.
  3. Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding to settle your pet during the journey and to lay them on afterwards.
  4. Ask whether you can stay from start to finish. Owners who were present often say it made the guilt lighter in the weeks that followed.
  5. If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. Euthanasia medication stays in a pet's tissues, so pick a place animals can't reach and cover it with a heavy slab.
  6. Settle the bill beforehand if the practice allows, so you can leave quietly when it's over.
  7. Give surviving cage mates a few minutes to sniff and investigate, if your pet comes home with you.

Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close

Amsterdam's maritime climate is mild and damp, with cool summers, grey winters and frequent wind and rain. That gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body in a cool room on a blanket and away from radiators. During summer heat waves, which the Netherlands now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about cool storage if a weekend gets in the way.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Amsterdam?

Usually yes. Haarlem is about 11 miles away, Utrecht is about 21 miles away and The Hague is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Netherlands?

For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Amsterdam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?

A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.

Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?

It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.

What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?

Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.

Is same-day cremation available for a hamster in Amsterdam?

Some providers in larger cities offer same-day or next-day private cremation, usually for an extra fee. By our estimate, published return times range from same-day paid express to about four weeks, with three to fourteen days typical.[8] For a pet this small it's rarely necessary, since a chilled hamster keeps safely until a normal appointment. If you need the ashes quickly, ask for an express price in writing.
