Saying goodbye to a hamster, rat or mouse in Eindhoven
Most price lists in Eindhoven start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.

How families in Eindhoven handle a small pet's death
Eindhoven grew around industry and technology, and many residents live in terraced houses, apartment blocks and newer developments like Strijp-S, with plenty of international workers in rented flats. Many people cycle rather than drive. If your pet dies at home, collection can save you a difficult journey. Mention your district, floor and whether a vehicle can park outside when you ask for options.
Eindhoven has a mild, damp climate typical of the southern Netherlands, with cool winters, occasional frost and summers that can bring hot spells. The cooler months give you a little more time, but a pet's body should still be kept cool: wrap your pet in a towel, place cold packs nearby and use the coolest room. In a summer heatwave, arrange collection sooner.
If you'd like to compare, look a little beyond town. Providers serving North Brabant often cover Eindhoven too, and one may offer a lower small-pet price or a private tray cremation that another doesn't. With a pet that fits in a shoebox, a short drive to drop off is easy, and it keeps the cost down.
About 231,000 people live in Eindhoven. The nearest larger centre is Utrecht, about 47 miles (76 km) away, which is where some providers serving Eindhoven are based.
The closest communities we cover are Utrecht (47 miles), Rotterdam (54 miles, a larger centre) and The Hague (66 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Eindhoven too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Burial, cremation and the Netherlands tradition
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Netherlands, at about 68.37%[1], but burial still has deep roots. You'll see both among rodent keepers too. Neither is more proper. For a pet this small, the practical questions are whether you own your garden, whether you can dig deep enough and whether you'd like something to keep.
That Netherlands rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Eindhoven only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Eindhoven
We don't hold detailed weather records for Eindhoven, so use your own thermometer. If the room where your pet lived felt cold overnight, roughly below 60°F (15°C), check a hamster for torpor before anything else. If it was hotter than about 80°F (27°C), heat may have played a part, and any other pets need moving somewhere cooler.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Eindhoven?
In Eindhoven, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.

Local rules for small-pet burial in North Brabant
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[6], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in North Brabant. Local burial and scattering rules follow.
In the Netherlands, burying a small pet in your own garden is widely accepted, though your gemeente may set conditions. Several pet insurers reimburse part of cremation costs, but policies for small rodents are rarer, so check before assuming cover. For individual cremation of a hamster or rat, ask whether the crematorium uses a separate tray for very small animals.
Your checklist for a small pet in Eindhoven
- Breathe. A pet this small doesn't need any urgent calls. Wrap them in a paper towel or soft cloth and place them in a small box.
- Talk to the children using the real word, died, rather than saying the pet went to sleep. Invite them to pick the box or to make a drawing to tuck in beside their friend.
- Decide where your pet will rest. A crematorium that covers Eindhoven, a tall planter, or a spot in your own garden.
- If burying, dig deeper than feels necessary and put a flat stone or slab over the spot so foxes, cats and dogs can't dig.
- If cremating, ring one or two providers and ask for a written price that says private or communal and lists any container fee.
- Drop your pet off yourself in a lined box if you can; it usually saves a collection fee.
- Plan a small ritual, and five minutes is enough: say something, add a bloom, and tuck a treat they loved next to them.
Small memorials for small pets
Many Eindhoven families associate a pet with the green spaces around the city, the parks along the Dommel and the heathland and woods of the Kempen nearby. A private cremation returns ashes you can keep or scatter later, after checking the rules for that place. A communal cremation, with no ashes returned, costs less and is a respectful option. You can decide at your own pace.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Eindhoven actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Utrecht, about 47 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Eindhoven and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Eindhoven?
Usually yes. Utrecht is about 47 miles away, Rotterdam is about 54 miles away and The Hague is about 66 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Netherlands?
For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Eindhoven follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in Eindhoven?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near Eindhoven, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Eindhoven vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
