Hong Kong's summers are hot and very humid, with typhoon season from roughly May to November. A pet's body needs to be kept cool quickly in that heat: lay your pet on a towel and tuck ice packs around the body and run the air conditioning. Typhoon signals can pause collections, so if a storm is approaching, ask how the provider handles delays and how long cooling can safely continue.
Many Hong Kong families link their pet to one particular view or place: a window looking over the harbor, the rooftop of a village house, or the country parks and waterfront promenades of weekend outings. Scattering ashes on public land isn't straightforward here, so most families keep their pet's ashes at home. A private cremation, with the family attending if they wish, is the most common way to say goodbye, and it leaves later choices open.
Big cities tend to have at least one vet that sees small exotics, often under the banner of an exotics or avian clinic. If your regular vet doesn't treat rats or hamsters, ask them who does. An exotics vet in Hong Kong will usually also know which local crematorium handles pocket pets carefully, which saves you ringing around on a hard day.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
About 96.96%[1] of people in Hong Kong are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, crematoria compete for business, which can help you. Ask for a small-pet price for your rat or gerbil; with plenty of providers nearby, someone is likely to quote below the standard cat band.

Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Hong Kong
We don't hold detailed weather records for Hong Kong, so use your own thermometer. If the room where your pet lived felt cold overnight, roughly below 60°F (15°C), check a hamster for torpor before anything else. If it was hotter than about 80°F (27°C), heat may have played a part, and any other pets need moving somewhere cooler.
How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse

What Hong Kong Island allows for a small pet
If your rodent died of something contagious, the rules in Hong Kong Island and common sense point the same way: cremation is the safer choice, and used bedding should be bagged and binned rather than composted. Your vet can tell you whether the illness was likely infectious. Burial and scattering details for Hong Kong Island are set out below.
In Hong Kong, the government collection route sends dead animals to landfill, so families who want something back arrange a private cremation. One provider lists basic individual cremation at about HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet. For a hamster, ask whether a lower price applies and whether a small farewell is included.
A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- Look for signs of life gently. A hamster kept somewhere chilly can slip into torpor, so warm them and give it a few hours before you decide.
- Keep your pet safe and cool, boxed with a liner, out of the sun and away from other animals.
- Think about euthanasia drugs. When a vet has put your pet to sleep, wildlife can be harmed by the body, so go much deeper and cover with a slab, or cremate instead.
- Compare two options: a private or communal cremation somewhere near Hong Kong, and a grave at home. Note the cost of each side by side.
- Consider cage mates who died close together. Ask whether they can be cremated privately and returned in one vial.
- Choose a memorial that fits, whether that's a photo frame, a tiny urn or a plant on the windowsill.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Hong Kong flats are small and often high up, and public housing tenancy rules limit which animals can be kept, so pets live in private apartments, estates and village houses in the New Territories alike. Few families have space for a burial, and the government's hygiene department can collect a pet's body for disposal but doesn't return any remains. Is cremation common in Hong Kong?
For people, yes: about 96.96%[1] of Hong Kong deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hong Kong follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Hong Kong?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Hong Kong vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
How deep should I bury a hamster or rat in Hong Kong?
There's usually no legal minimum for a pet this small, so go by what keeps animals out: deeper than most people expect. Foxes, dogs, cats and raccoons can smell a shallow grave. Wrap your pet in paper or cotton, avoid plastic, and lay a flat stone or paving slab over the spot. Keep away from wells, streams, ponds and vegetable beds.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
