Hamster & Rat Cremation in Norway: what to know
Families in Norway often find the hardest part of losing a hamster or rat isn't the arrangements; it's feeling that the grief is out of proportion. It isn't. Short lives can be close ones. Alongside burial, cremation and cost, this guide points to support after a small pet's death and to local pages across Norway.
In Norway, most families still arrange small-pet aftercare through the vet, and many bury at home without involving anyone. Both are fine. If you rent, live in a flat or might move, cremation or a deep planter burial keeps your options open. Below you'll find costs, local rules and every place we cover.

Burial, cremation and the Norway tradition
Only about 49.27%[1] of people in Norway are cremated, so burial is the local tradition, and garden burial of small pets is the usual choice here too. It's free and immediate. Just bury deeper than feels necessary and cover the spot with a stone, because wildlife and dogs will find a shallow grave.
That Norway rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Small-pet cremation prices for Norway families
In Norway, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.
Europe keeps about 24.7 million[2] pet small mammals, a group that includes hamsters, rats and degus, so crematoria around Norway see rodents regularly even if they don't advertise for them. Ask for the lowest weight band in writing, and check whether VAT and a basic container are already in the quoted price.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland, pets under 2 kg | Ask locally | from EUR 150[3] |
| Germany, all sizes | EUR 85 to 205[4] | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Norway, 1 to 20 kg | from NOK 1,190[5] | NOK 3,790 |
We built the this numbers from Hjertedyr (Norway) and deine, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Norway rules for pocket pets
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Norway and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
In Norway, published pet cremation prices start with a 1 to 20 kg band,[5] so a rodent is charged the same as a much larger pet unless you ask. Communal cremation is far cheaper than separate. Frozen ground rules out garden burial for much of the year, so many families keep a small pet in the freezer until spring.
The first day, one step at a time
- Take a photo or a clipping of fur, and keep their hammock, wheel or favorite hideout if you'd like to.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: the deepest, widest pot you can find, your pet low down, compost on top and a plant that means something to you.
- If you'd rather cremate, contact a crematorium directly or ask us to find small-pet options for you.
- Watch surviving cage mates over the next two weeks. More handling, longer free-range time and a snug nest box all make a difference.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
A planter on the windowsill is one of the loveliest memorials for a hamster or mouse. The plant grows where your pet used to sleep, and it moves with you if you leave Norway. Lavender, forget-me-nots, a small rose or a pot of cat grass all work.

Questions people ask
Can two rats who died close together be cremated together?
Yes. Ask for them to be cremated together and returned in one container, or for two private cremations with separate vials. Put your choice in writing and ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in Norway?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
Where can I scatter a small pet's ashes in Norway?
Private land with permission is simplest. Parks and public spaces often have their own rules. With a pet this small, many families scatter a pinch under a plant in their garden or a planter, and keep a little back in a keepsake vial.
Do vets in Norway charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
How do I find a vet who sees rats and hamsters in Norway?
Look for exotics or small-animal clinics, especially in larger places like Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger. Ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. If your own vet doesn't, they can usually refer you, and that vet will often know which crematorium handles tiny pets with care.
Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in Norway?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds. Many schools prefer communal cremation arranged by a nearby vet, because grounds change and not every family is comfortable with a burial on site. Our plan for classroom goodbyes keeps it simple.
