When a small pet dies in Bergen: burial or cremation

Bergen, Vestland

Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Bergen

Many Bergen families think of the mountains when they remember a pet: the trails on Fløyen above the city, the wide plateau of Vidden, or a quiet spot by the fjord. Scattering ashes on public or private land is something to check with the landowner first. Many families keep ashes at home, or bury them in their own garden, where a small stone can mark the place.

Bergen is famous for rain, with wet weather much of the year, but its coastal climate is mild for its latitude, with cool summers and winters that often stay above freezing near sea level. That gives you a little more time than in hot climates. Still, wrap your pet's body, keep it in the coolest room and arrange collection within a day or two.

Hamsters and mice are often a child's first pet in Bergen households, which makes this a child's first goodbye. Let them help choose the box, draw a picture to go inside or pick the spot in the garden. A small ritual today tends to matter far more to a child than the choice between burial and cremation.

Bergen's population is around 283,000.

Our pages for Stavanger (99 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bergen as well.

A little one at home in Bergen

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little

Burial is still the stronger tradition in Norway, where about 49.27%[1] of people are cremated. For small rodents that fits naturally: most are buried in a garden, a planter or on family land. Cremation is available if you rent, if the ground is frozen or if a child wants something to hold, and it isn't unusual to ask for it.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Norway figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Bergen tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Bergen

Cold rooms can put hamsters into torpor, a deep sleep that looks a lot like death. Hot rooms can cause heatstroke in rats and hamsters surprisingly quickly. If you're in Bergen and unsure, warm a cold hamster gently and watch; if a pet died in the heat, check the cage position for any cage mates still with you.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Bergen

Ashes don't always come back quickly in Europe. In Sweden, for example, individual cremations usually come back in two to four weeks.[5] If you live in Bergen and hope to have a keepsake before a family gathering or a move, check the likely return date before booking, and whether going through the vet adds time.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Vestland: Vestland costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Vestland

Rodents are too small to trigger most of the rules written for livestock and larger pets, so aftercare in Vestland is mostly a matter of good sense. The points that do apply are who owns the ground, whether your pet was euthanized and whether any illness could spread. The local burial and scattering notes for Vestland follow.

In Norway, published pet cremation prices start with a 1 to 20 kg band,[7] so a rodent is charged the same as a much larger pet unless you ask. Communal cremation is far cheaper than separate. Frozen ground rules out garden burial for much of the year, so many families keep a small pet in the freezer until spring.

What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Bergen

  1. Stay with your pet for a while if you want to. There's no rush with a small body in a cool room.
  2. Tell the family, children too, in simple, truthful words, and give anyone who wants one a quiet moment to say goodbye.
  3. Check the ground. Frozen, rocky or waterlogged soil makes a deep grave hard; a planter or cremation are the alternatives.
  4. Call your vet or a crematorium if cremating, and ask whether they take pocket pets on a separate tray.
  5. Get the price in writing ahead of the handover, and check it for a collection charge or an urn you never asked for.
  6. Mark the spot or the day, with a stone, a plant or a note in the calendar, so the goodbye has a place to live.

Keeping their memory alive in Bergen

Bergen is built on steep hillsides between seven mountains and the fjord, and many homes are reached by narrow lanes, long flights of steps or streets too tight for a large vehicle. Wooden houses in older neighborhoods and apartments in the center are both common. If you'd like a pet collected from home, describe the stairs, the lane and where a car can stop, so collection can be planned properly.

Questions people ask

How do Norway attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Norway human cremation rate at about 49.27%[1]. We show it on the Bergen page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?

Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[8] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.

Is my hamster dead or in torpor?

In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.

How long until I get my rat's ashes back in Bergen?

Many families wait about one to two weeks. In a smaller town where pets travel to a regional crematorium, it can take longer because collections run on set days. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether you can collect the ashes yourself to save time.

How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Bergen?

Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Bergen provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.

Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Bergen?

A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
