Caring for your rat, hamster or gerbil in Dubai after they die
Most price lists in Dubai start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.
- Realistic ash amounts for a pet under a pound
- Ask for a small-pet rate, not a dog band

Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Dubai
Many Dubai residents are expats whose pets have traveled with them from other countries, and a large share of families will eventually move on again. That makes cremation with ashes returned the most common choice, because ashes can travel with you when you relocate. If you plan to take them abroad, ask the provider for a cremation certificate and a sealed, travel-friendly container.
Dubai's summer heat is extreme, often well above 40°C from June to September, so a pet's body must be cooled almost immediately. Wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs around the body and keep them in an air-conditioned room until collection. Even in the milder winter months, arranging aftercare the same day or the next is the safe approach.
Urban wildlife is a real issue in Dubai. Foxes, raccoons, rats and neighbors' dogs will dig up a shallow grave in a small yard within days. If you're burying at home, dig well down and lay a paving slab or heavy stone flat over the spot. If the soil won't let you dig properly, a planter or cremation is kinder to everyone.
About 3,331,000 people live in Dubai, which makes it the largest of the 2 United Arab Emirates communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Emirates Hills (13 miles), Sharjah (13 miles) and Abu Dhabi (76 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[2]

3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Even without local data for Dubai, one pattern holds almost everywhere: the smaller the pet, the more often families bury at home. Cremation becomes the likelier choice for renters, apartment dwellers and owners of longer-lived rodents such as chinchillas and degus, whose ashes can fill a small urn. Work out which group you're in and the choice usually gets clearer.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Dubai
Whatever the weather in Dubai, the rule for a small pet is the same: wrap them, place them in a small box and keep them cool. A fridge gives you a day or two. In cold weather, check your hamster isn't in torpor before deciding; in hot weather, don't leave them in the cage or a car while you think.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
Currency and taxes make quotes in Dubai hard to compare with the figures in the table, which come from other countries. Use them to judge the shape of a quote rather than the number: communal should be clearly cheaper than individual, collection should be itemized, and a small pet shouldn't be charged a large-dog band.

United Arab Emirates rules for pocket pets
A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in United Arab Emirates, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. The general burial and scattering rules follow.
In the UAE, pet burial isn't generally permitted, so cremation is the usual route even for a hamster or rat. Shared cremation of a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900; separate cremation costs more. Summer heat is intense, so keep your pet wrapped and in the fridge until drop-off, and ask how ashes are returned.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly to carry out the euthanasia, and check that they sedate small pets beforehand, as most practices do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day arrives, whether private cremation, communal, or burial at home, rather than working it out at reception.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding so your pet is calm on the way and comfortable afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay for the whole appointment. Many owners find that being there eases the guilt later.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. Euthanasia medication stays in a pet's tissues, so pick a place animals can't reach and cover it with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand if the practice allows, so you can leave quietly when it's over.
- Give surviving cage mates a few minutes to sniff and investigate, if your pet comes home with you.
Keeping their memory alive in Dubai
Dubai pets live in apartment towers in areas like the Marina and Downtown, and in villa communities with small gardens further out. Burying a pet in a community garden, the desert or on public land isn't a straightforward option, so most owners arrange cremation through a vet or a pet aftercare provider. Share your community and building details when you ask, and mention if you'll need collection.
For a plain comparison of the choices, open services, or compare your instinct with the poll results, the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, there are guides for the big decisions and articles for the details. If you live between Dubai and Emirates Hills, either page applies. Every other community in United Arab Emirates, and all of the United Arab Emirates, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dubai?
Usually yes. Emirates Hills is about 13 miles away, Sharjah is about 13 miles away and Abu Dhabi is about 76 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I send my pet for cremation in Dubai if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in Dubai?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near Dubai, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Dubai?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
