Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Dubai are below.
In the UAE, pet burial isn't generally permitted, so cremation is the usual route even for a hamster or rat. Shared cremation of a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900; separate cremation costs more. Summer heat is intense, so keep your pet wrapped and in the fridge until drop-off, and ask how ashes are returned.
Your checklist for a small pet in Dubai
- If an escaped rat, mouse or hamster is found dead in the house, wear gloves, lift them in a cloth and lay them in a shoebox.
- Think about poison. If there's any chance they reached rodent bait, tell your vet and keep other pets away from the spot.
- Skip the home grave if bait is possible. A poisoned body can harm a dog, cat or owl that digs it up, so cremation is the safer route.
- Clean the place where they were found with hot soapy water.
- Forgive yourself. These animals are born escapologists, and the most attentive keeper can still lose one under the floor or down the back of a sofa.
- Check cage doors and gaps so the rest of the group don't follow; a cheap door clip is all it usually takes.

Is private cremation worth it for a mouse or hamster in Dubai?
It's worth it if you want a keepsake, can't bury, or might move. It returns only a pinch to a tablespoon of ash, and can cost several times what the pet did. Communal cremation or a careful home burial are equally respectful choices. Ask any provider whether they use a small tray for tiny pets.
Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in Dubai?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds. How do I find a vet who sees rats and hamsters in Dubai?
Look for exotics or small-animal clinics, especially in larger places like Dubai and Emirates Hills. Ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. If your own vet doesn't, they can usually refer you, and that vet will often know which crematorium handles tiny pets with care.
Can two rats who died close together be cremated together?
Yes. Ask for them to be cremated together and returned in one container, or for two private cremations with separate vials. Put your choice in writing and ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in Dubai?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
