Burial, cremation and the France tradition
Burial is still the stronger tradition in France, where about 44.91%[1] of people are cremated. For small rodents that fits naturally: most are buried in a garden, a planter or on family land. Cremation is available if you rent, if the ground is frozen or if a child wants something to hold, and it isn't unusual to ask for it.

Small-pet cremation prices for France families
In France, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.
Europe keeps about 24.7 million[2] pet small mammals, a group that includes hamsters, rats and degus, so crematoria around France see rodents regularly even if they don't advertise for them. Ask for the lowest weight band in writing, and check whether VAT and a basic container are already in the quoted price.

Local rules for small-pet burial in France
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which France and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rongeur. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Burial of small animals on your own land is generally allowed away from homes and water sources, but check with your mairie. For a hamster, ask whether individual cremation has a small-animal price below the cat band.
Your checklist for a small pet in France
- Check for torpor first. A hamster that feels stiff and cold after a chilly night may only be in torpor. Cup them in your palms or a towel and keep an eye on them for several hours.
- Once you're sure, take your time. Settle them into a tissue-lined tub or a little cardboard box, adding a pinch of the bedding they slept in.
- Let cage mates say goodbye. A gerbil, mouse or rat will usually spend a minute or two sniffing at a companion who has died, and plenty of keepers believe that settles them.
- Keep the box cool. A chilly room will do for a few hours; for a day or two, wrap and bag your pet and use the fridge.
- Choose burial or cremation. Burial is free and immediate if you own the ground; communal cremation costs little; private returns a keepsake pinch.
- If cremating, ask three questions: is there a small-pet rate, will a separate tray be used, and roughly how much ash comes back?
- Clean the cage thoroughly if illness might have been the cause, before any new or surviving pets use it.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Freeze-drying is sometimes offered for small pets, and it does keep a rat or hamster looking as they did. It's slow and expensive: one industry report says small pets typically take three to six months,[7] and one UK guide puts hamster freeze-drying at £300 to £500.[8] Most France families choose a photo, a paw print or a tiny vial instead, but it's a real option if it matters to you.

Is private cremation worth it for a mouse or hamster in France?
It's worth it if you want a keepsake, can't bury, or might move. It returns only a pinch to a tablespoon of ash, and can cost several times what the pet did. Communal cremation or a careful home burial are equally respectful choices. Ask any provider whether they use a small tray for tiny pets.
Is cremation common in France?
For people, 44.91%[1] of deaths in France end in cremation, and pet crematoria are easier to find where that rate is higher. For hamsters and rats, though, home burial is still very common because it's free and immediate. Both are normal choices.
How long do rodent ashes take to come back in France?
Usually days rather than weeks, though it depends on how the crematorium collects. By our estimate, typical return times across the markets we track run from three to fourteen days,[9] with paid express services faster and some European providers slower. Ask for a date when you book.
What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in France?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
How much does rodent cremation cost in France?
Most providers across France charge a hamster or rat at their smallest weight band, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than private, and home burial is free. Ask each provider for a written quote, whether a small-pet rate applies and whether a basic container is included.
Do vets in France charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
