Paris summers can bring intense heatwaves, and apartments under zinc roofs heat up fast. In hot weather, cool your pet's body within a few hours: wrap them in a towel, place ice packs around the body, close the shutters and choose the coolest room you have. Winters are cool and damp, which buys a little more time, but arranging aftercare within a day or two keeps options open.
Most Parisians live in apartments, often in Haussmann-era buildings with tiny lifts or top-floor rooms up six flights of stairs, and many don't own a car. Pet crematoria are in the suburbs outside the périphérique, so collection from the apartment is the usual first step. French rules allow garden burial only in limited circumstances, which rules it out for most Parisians anyway. Share your arrondissement and building details when you ask.
With several crematoria in and around Paris, it's worth asking how each one returns ashes from very small pets. A careful provider will be honest that a mouse may leave only a pinch, and that a dwarf hamster's bones are fragile. Anyone who promises a full urn from a 30-gram animal isn't being straight with you.

Cremation habits in France, and what they mean for a hamster
In France, cremation is chosen for only about 44.91%[1] of people, so you may need to ask your vet directly about cremation, because it isn't always offered first. For a hamster that's easy: most practices have an arrangement with a regional crematorium even if few clients use it. Ask how long ashes take and whether pocket pets go on their own tray.

Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Paris
Local weather affects two things for a rodent: how quickly you need to cool the body, and whether a burial in the garden is practical. Hard, frozen or waterlogged ground makes a deep grave difficult. In Paris, a deep planter or cremation are the easy alternatives when the ground won't cooperate.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Ile-de-France
Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Ile-de-France are below.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rongeur. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Burial of small animals on your own land is generally allowed away from homes and water sources, but check with your mairie. For a hamster, ask whether individual cremation has a small-animal price below the cat band.
The first day, one step at a time
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, ask them to place the body in a small lined box, bag it and put it in the fridge.
- Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, ask a provider whether your sitter can drop your pet off, and get the quote by email.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup when the death came as a surprise, so you can rule out a stuck water bottle, a draft or a room that got too hot.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
Many Parisian families picture their pet in one favorite place: a sunny windowsill above the street, a courtyard, or the quays of the Seine, the Bois de Boulogne or the Bois de Vincennes. Scattering ashes in public parks or the river generally isn't allowed without permission, so many families keep the ashes at home or take them to family land in the countryside.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Paris?
Usually yes. Neuilly-sur-Seine is about 4 miles away, Versailles is about 11 miles away and Reims is about 81 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Paris page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I be there when my hamster is cremated?
Some crematoria offer an attended or witnessed cremation, even for small pets. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. For a pocket pet, many providers can fit it in fairly easily because the cremation itself is short. Ask on your first call to a Paris provider.
How do I explain a hamster's death to a young child?

What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a Paris park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
