Burial or cremation for a pocket pet in Neuilly-sur-Seine
Pets in Neuilly spend their outdoor lives in the Bois de Boulogne, on the leafy riverbanks of the Île de la Jatte, which Seurat painted, and in the town's squares along its tree-lined avenues. Owners often think of the Seine when they picture their animal. The Bois and municipal parks set their own rules, so find out before scattering anything outdoors.
Neuilly is a town of Haussmann-era apartment buildings and private mansions, squeezed between the 17th arrondissement, the Bois de Boulogne and the Seine. Most buildings have a gardien, and street parking is scarce. Before anyone comes to your door, tell them the entry code, the étage and whether the lift fits a stretcher. Avenue Charles-de-Gaulle traffic can add half an hour at peak times.
In farming country around Neuilly-sur-Seine, barn cats and working dogs are a real risk to a small grave, and so are the wild rats and mice living in outbuildings. Choose a spot away from barns and feed stores, weigh the grave down with something heavy and flat, and consider a stone the children can paint. It turns a practical precaution into part of the goodbye.
About 60,000 people live in Neuilly-sur-Seine, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 3 Ile-de-France communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Paris, about 4 miles (7 km) away, which is where some providers serving Neuilly-sur-Seine are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Paris (4 miles, a larger centre), Versailles (9 miles) and Reims (84 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation habits in France, and what they mean for a hamster
With cremation at about 44.91%[1] in France, many families here have land and a habit of burying animals on it. That habit works for rodents too, with one caution: if your pet was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body, so choose a spot where no dog, raccoon or bird of prey is likely to dig, and weigh it down well.
That France rate is a human one, published by ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). We quote it for Neuilly-sur-Seine only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the seasons mean for rodent aftercare in Neuilly-sur-Seine
Local weather affects two things for a rodent: how quickly you need to cool the body, and whether a burial in the garden is practical. Hard, frozen or waterlogged ground makes a deep grave difficult. In Neuilly-sur-Seine, a deep planter or cremation are the easy alternatives when the ground won't cooperate.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Neuilly-sur-Seine?
In Neuilly-sur-Seine, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.
The full price table by size is on our Ile-de-France page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Burial and scattering rules in Ile-de-France
Public parks, nature reserves and shared courtyards are off-limits for pet burial almost everywhere, including Ile-de-France. Private land with the owner's permission is the usual answer, and a deep planter counts as your own ground. Here's what else applies locally.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rongeur. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Burial of small animals on your own land is generally allowed away from homes and water sources, but check with your mairie. For a hamster, ask whether individual cremation has a small-animal price below the cat band.
Your checklist for a small pet in Neuilly-sur-Seine
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly to carry out the euthanasia, and check that they sedate small pets beforehand, as most practices do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day so you aren't choosing at the counter: home burial, communal, or private cremation.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding so your pet is calm on the way and comfortable afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay for the whole appointment. Many owners find that being there eases the guilt later.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. Euthanasia medication stays in a pet's tissues, so pick a place animals can't reach and cover it with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand where the practice offers it, so there's no queue at the desk and you can simply go.
- Give surviving cage mates a few minutes with your pet's body if you bring them home.
Ways to mark a short, bright life
Summer heatwaves can turn upper floors in Neuilly into ovens, even though the Paris region is mild most of the year. After a death in hot weather, draw the shutters, choose the coolest room with a stone or parquet floor, and ring the body with frozen gel packs on a sheet. In winter, keeping your pet away from radiators is enough overnight. Many vets hold bodies briefly.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Neuilly-sur-Seine?
Usually yes. Paris is about 4 miles away, Versailles is about 9 miles away and Reims is about 84 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Neuilly-sur-Seine page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Paris to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Paris (roughly 4 miles from Neuilly-sur-Seine) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Neuilly-sur-Seine?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Neuilly-sur-Seine provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
Schools usually let the teacher decide, often with parents. A short ceremony and a burial in the school garden, with the head's permission, or communal cremation through a local vet, are the common choices. Our classroom goodbye guide has a simple plan teachers can use in Neuilly-sur-Seine or anywhere.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
