Reims, Grand Est
Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Reims
Reims has a temperate climate with cold, grey winters and warm summers, and hot spells can arrive in July and August. In summer, keep your pet's body cool with ice packs wrapped in a towel and the shutters closed. In winter you have a little more time, but frozen ground makes a garden burial difficult, which is one reason many families choose cremation.
Reims is a compact city, with apartments in the center and around the cathedral, and houses with gardens in the outer districts and surrounding villages. Many pets here live in flats, which can make it hard to move a larger animal down narrow stairs. When you ask for options, mention your building, floor and whether you have a car, since some families will need collection from home.
Not every rodent in Reims is tiny. Chinchillas can live up to 20 years[1], according to the Merck Veterinary Manual, and a degu or an older rat weighs many times what a dwarf hamster does. For these larger, longer-lived pets, private cremation returns enough ash for a small keepsake urn, and families who shared a decade with a chinchilla often want that. Ask providers to price by weight, not species.
Reims's population is around 182,000, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Grand Est communities we cover.
Our pages for Paris (81 miles, a larger centre), Neuilly-sur-Seine (84 miles) and Versailles (92 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Reims as well.
44.91%[2]
In 2023, 44.91% of deaths in France led to cremation.
1.75 years[3]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[4]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[5]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
Only about 44.91%[2] of people in France are cremated, so burial is the local tradition, and garden burial of small pets is the usual choice here too. It's free and immediate. Just bury deeper than feels necessary and cover the spot with a stone, because wildlife and dogs will find a shallow grave.
For the France figure we rely on ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Reims rather than as pet data.
How Reims's weather shapes the first day
Local weather affects two things for a rodent: how quickly you need to cool the body, and whether a burial in the garden is practical. Hard, frozen or waterlogged ground makes a deep grave difficult. In Reims, a deep planter or cremation are the easy alternatives when the ground won't cooperate.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
Europe keeps about 24.7 million[6] pet small mammals, a group that includes hamsters, rats and degus, so crematoria around Reims see rodents regularly even if they don't advertise for them. Ask for the lowest weight band in writing, and check whether VAT and a basic container are already in the quoted price.

Grand Est rules for pocket pets
Nothing in Grand Est requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rongeur. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Burial of small animals on your own land is generally allowed away from homes and water sources, but check with your mairie. For a hamster, ask whether individual cremation has a small-animal price below the cat band.
Step by step for a small pet in Reims
- Stay with your pet for a while if you want to. There's no rush with a small body in a cool room.
- Tell the family, including children, honestly and simply. Let everyone who wants to say goodbye have a moment.
- Check the ground. Frozen, rocky or waterlogged soil makes a deep grave hard; a planter or cremation are the alternatives.
- Call your vet or a crematorium if cremating, and ask whether they take pocket pets on a separate tray.
- Get the price in writing ahead of the handover, and check it for a collection charge or an urn you never asked for.
- Mark the spot or the day, with a pebble, something planted or a date circled in the diary, so the goodbye has somewhere to belong.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
Many families in Reims remember pets by the green spaces they shared, such as the Parc de Champagne or the paths along the canal. Some keep an urn at home and visit those spots on anniversaries, others scatter a small amount of ashes. If you'd like to scatter on public land, ask the city or the land manager about rules before you go.

Questions people ask
Why does the Reims page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[2] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Reims?
Usually yes. Paris is about 81 miles away, Neuilly-sur-Seine is about 84 miles away and Versailles is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Reims vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
Can I send my pet for cremation in Reims if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in Reims?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near Reims, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
