Cremation habits in France, and what they mean for a hamster
Only about 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, so burial is the local tradition, and garden burial of small pets is the usual choice here too. It's free and immediate. Just bury deeper than feels necessary and cover the spot with a stone, because wildlife and dogs will find a shallow grave.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Grand Est
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Grand Est and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rongeur. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Burial of small animals on your own land is generally allowed away from homes and water sources, but check with your mairie. For a hamster, ask whether individual cremation has a small-animal price below the cat band.
The first day, one step at a time
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly for the euthanasia, and ask whether they sedate small pets first; most do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day so you aren't choosing at the counter: home burial, communal, or private cremation.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding so your pet is calm on the way and comfortable afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay from start to finish. Owners who were present often say it made the guilt lighter in the weeks that followed.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. Euthanasia medication stays in a pet's tissues, so pick a place animals can't reach and cover it with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand if the practice allows, so you can leave quietly when it's over.

Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Strasbourg follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I send my pet for cremation in Strasbourg if it died of an illness?
