Burial is still the stronger tradition in France, where about 44.91%[1] of people are cremated. For small rodents that fits naturally: most are buried in a garden, a planter or on family land. Cremation is available if you rent, if the ground is frozen or if a child wants something to hold, and it isn't unusual to ask for it.

Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Nantes vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
