When a small pet dies in Rennes: burial or cremation
Most price lists in Rennes start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.
- Communal or private for a 100 g pet
- Cage mates cremated together or apart
- Tiny vials and keepsakes that fit

Rennes, Bretagne
What Rennes offers when a rat or hamster dies
Rennes is a compact city where many people live in flats, from the half-timbered buildings of the old center to the apartment districts ringing the rocade, and a large student population means plenty of small households. Many residents get around by metro, bus or bike rather than car. When a pet dies, collection from home can make a real difference, so tell us your district, floor and whether there's a lift when you ask for aftercare options.
Rennes has a mild, damp Breton climate, with frequent rain, cool summers and gentle winters where hard frosts are rare. That gives you a little more time after a pet dies than in the hot south of France, but the body should still be kept cool: set your pet on a towel with frozen bottles or cool packs pressed to the belly and back, and keep the room cool and airy while you arrange collection, ideally within a day.
Crematoria serving Rennes are sometimes based on the edge of town or near Nantes, because they need space and permits. For a pet this small, that's rarely a problem. Many will accept a hamster or rat dropped off by the owner, or collect from your vet on their regular run, so you don't pay for a dedicated trip.
Rennes is home to about 216,000 people. Some of the providers who serve Rennes are based about 62 miles away in Nantes, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Nantes (62 miles) and Le Havre (125 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Rennes too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
44.91%[1]
In 2023, 44.91% of deaths in France led to cremation.
1.75 years[2]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, cremation and the France tradition
In France, cremation is chosen for only about 44.91%[1] of people, so you may need to ask your vet directly about cremation, because it isn't always offered first. For a hamster that's easy: most practices have an arrangement with a regional crematorium even if few clients use it. Ask how long ashes take and whether pocket pets go on their own tray.
We take the France rate from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Rennes, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Rennes
Seasons in Rennes shape the ceremony more than the logistics. A pet this small can be cooled and kept safely for a day or two whatever the weather, so pick a moment when the family can be together and the ground, or the planter, is ready.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
Europe keeps about 24.7 million[5] pet small mammals, a group that includes hamsters, rats and degus, so crematoria around Rennes see rodents regularly even if they don't advertise for them. Ask for the lowest weight band in writing, and check whether VAT and a basic container are already in the quoted price.

What Bretagne allows for a small pet
Scattering a teaspoon of hamster ash raises fewer questions than scattering a dog's, but the same principles apply in Bretagne: ask permission on land you don't own, keep clear of drinking-water sources and busy paths, and pick a calm day. Here's what the rules say locally.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rongeur. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Burial of small animals on your own land is generally allowed away from homes and water sources, but check with your mairie. For a hamster, ask whether individual cremation has a small-animal price below the cat band.
A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, have them settle the body into a lined box, seal that inside a bag and keep it refrigerated.
- Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup if the death was unexpected; heat, drafts or a jammed water bottle are worth ruling out.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
In France, pet cremation comes in two main forms: individual, where your pet is cremated alone and the ashes come back to you, and collective, where several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Many Rennes families choose individual cremation because a garden burial isn't an option in a flat. If you're unsure which to ask for, the question to settle first is simply whether you want the ashes back.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Rennes actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Nantes, about 62 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Rennes and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Rennes page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Rennes?
The closest communities we cover are Nantes (about 62 miles) and Le Havre (about 125 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Rennes too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is it legal to bury a hamster in my garden in France?
In most European countries, burying a small animal on property you own is allowed with conditions: away from water sources, outside protected zones and not if the animal had a notifiable disease. Details differ by country and sometimes by municipality, so check with your town hall or council. If you're renting or in an apartment in Rennes, individual or collective cremation through your vet is the usual route.
How long until I get my rat's ashes back in Rennes?
Many families wait about one to two weeks. In a smaller town where pets travel to a regional crematorium, it can take longer because collections run on set days. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether you can collect the ashes yourself to save time.
Can I bury my hamster if I rent or live in an apartment in Rennes?
Not in shared grounds without permission, and never in a public park. A deep planter is the easy answer: a large, deep pot, your pet wrapped near the bottom, plenty of compost and a plant on top. It moves with you. If that isn't practical, communal cremation through a local vet is simple and inexpensive.
