Few crematoria anywhere in Japan publish a price for a hamster, rat or mouse. Most put pocket pets in their smallest band, built around cats and small dogs. That's why it pays to ask for a small-animal rate, and to think honestly about whether a private cremation or a deep garden burial suits a pet that weighs a few ounces.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
In Japan, roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already understand the difference between private and communal. For a rodent, that difference matters more than usual: a private cremation may return only a teaspoon of ash, while communal returns nothing at all but costs far less. Both are dignified.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Japan
Space is tight in much of urban Asia, and many Japan families live in flats with no garden, so cremation is the usual path even for a hamster. Ask exactly what's included: some packages add a farewell ceremony, a small urn or a columbarium niche, which can matter more than the cremation fee itself.
In Tokyo, by our estimate, a private communal cremation for a small animal costs about 4.8 times the ward's own collection fee.[2] Many Asian cities offer a municipal route like that, cheaper but with nothing returned. For a hamster in Japan, ask whether a public option exists and what happens to animals collected that way before you decide.

Burial and scattering rules in Japan
Nothing in Japan requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
Your checklist for a small pet in Japan
- Stay with your pet for a while if you want to. There's no rush with a small body in a cool room.
- Tell the family, children too, in simple, truthful words, and give anyone who wants one a quiet moment to say goodbye.
- Check the ground. Frozen, rocky or waterlogged soil makes a deep grave hard; a planter or cremation are the alternatives.
- Call your vet or a crematorium when cremation is the plan, and find out if pocket pets can go through on their own tray.
- Get the price in writing ahead of the handover, and check it for a collection charge or an urn you never asked for.
- Mark the spot or the day, with a stone, a plant or a note in the calendar, so the goodbye has a place to live.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close

Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, 99.97%[1] of deaths in Japan end in cremation, and pet crematoria are easier to find where that rate is higher. For hamsters and rats, though, home burial is still very common because it's free and immediate. Both are normal choices.
Can I bury a hamster or rat at home in Japan?
Usually, if you own the land. Bury deep, wrapped in something biodegradable, away from water, with a stone on top so animals can't dig. Renters should ask the landlord or use a deep planter. City rules, homeowner associations and leases can be stricter than the general rules.
How much does rodent cremation cost in Japan?
Most providers across Japan charge a hamster or rat at their smallest weight band, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than private, and home burial is free. Ask each provider for a written quote, whether a small-pet rate applies and whether a basic container is included.
Do vets in Japan charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in Japan?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
