A pet's body needs cooling within hours: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. Cremation is the norm for people in Japan: about 99.97%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.

Cremating a hamster or rat needs no permit anywhere we cover. The rules that matter for small pets are about burial and scattering: whether you can bury in your own garden, how deep, and how far from water. Here's what applies in Aichi.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
Your checklist for a small pet in Nagoya
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly to carry out the euthanasia, and check that they sedate small pets beforehand, as most practices do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day so you aren't choosing at the counter: home burial, communal, or private cremation.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding to settle your pet during the journey and to lay them on afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay for the whole appointment. Many owners find that being there eases the guilt later.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. The drugs remain in the body after death, so choose a spot no animal can dig into and weigh it down with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand where the practice offers it, so there's no queue at the desk and you can simply go.
- Give surviving cage mates a few minutes to sniff and investigate, if your pet comes home with you.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Nagoya?
Usually yes. Hamamatsu is about 57 miles away, Kyoto is about 65 miles away and Nara is about 71 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Nagoya page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Nagoya?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Nagoya provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
How do I explain a hamster's death to a young child?

Do I need to use the crematorium my Nagoya vet recommends?
