Japanese families have a long habit of treating pets as part of the household altar and the family's memorial calendar, and Hamamatsu is no exception. Many people choose individual cremation so the bones and ashes can be brought home, sometimes gathered by the family with chopsticks as they would be for a person. If that ritual matters to you, ask whether the family can be present at the end of the cremation and collect the remains themselves.
Hamamatsu stretches from the Enshu coast up into the forested Tenryu hills, so the practical side of saying goodbye depends a lot on where you live. How Japan feels about cremation
In Japan, where roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]
We take the Japan rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Hamamatsu, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Shizuoka rules for pocket pets
If your rodent died of something contagious, the rules in Shizuoka and common sense point the same way: cremation is the safer choice, and used bedding should be bagged and binned rather than composted. In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Step by step for a small pet in Hamamatsu
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, have them settle the body into a lined box, seal that inside a bag and keep it refrigerated.
- Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, ask a provider whether your sitter can drop your pet off, and get the quote by email.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup if the death was unexpected; heat, drafts or a jammed water bottle are worth ruling out.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, even if the body has already gone: scattering ashes, planting something or looking through photos together.
Small memorials for small pets
Summers around Lake Hamana are hot and sticky, and typhoon season can bring days when nobody wants to be on the road. If your pet dies during a heatwave or a storm warning, keep the body cool indoors with ice packs wrapped in a towel and wait for safe conditions. In winter the dry Enshu wind blows hard off the coast, which is uncomfortable but gives you a little more time before arrangements become urgent.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hamamatsu?
Usually yes. Nagoya is about 57 miles away, Nara is about 109 miles away and Kyoto is about 113 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hamamatsu follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[9] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?
Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Hamamatsu vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
