Space is limited in many Nara homes, and burying a pet in a garden is not always practical. In Japan, nearly every pet is cremated, either alone so the family can collect the bones and ashes, or together with others. Some families also place the ashes in a pet memorial at a temple or a dedicated pet cemetery. Ask about the options and costs before you decide.
Nara summers are hot and humid, especially after the rainy season in June and July, and a pet's body should be cooled quickly with ice packs or dry ice, wrapped in a towel. In winter, cool temperatures give you a little more time. Many families keep their pet at home for a night, with flowers and incense, before the funeral.
If you rent in Nara, check your lease before digging, or use a deep planter you can take with you when you move. It's a surprisingly lovely option: pick a plant with meaning, like lavender or forget-me-nots, and it becomes a living memorial on the windowsill. Your landlord never needs to be involved.

What Japan's funeral habits mean for small pets
Cremation is the norm for people in Japan: about 99.97%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.

Burial and scattering rules in Japan
A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in Japan, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
Your checklist for a small pet in Nara
- Take a photo or a clipping of fur, and keep their hammock, wheel or favorite hideout if you'd like to.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: the deepest, widest pot you can find, your pet low down, compost on top and a plant that means something to you.

Can I bury my hamster if I rent or live in an apartment in Nara?
Not in shared grounds without permission, and never in a public park. A deep planter is the easy answer: a large, deep pot, your pet wrapped near the bottom, plenty of compost and a plant on top.
