In Japan, roughly 99.97%[2] of people are cremated, so most families already understand the difference between private and communal. For a rodent, that difference matters more than usual: a private cremation may return only a teaspoon of ash, while communal returns nothing at all but costs far less. Both are dignified.

What the seasons mean for rodent aftercare in Osaka

What Japan allows for a small pet
Scattering a teaspoon of hamster ash raises fewer questions than scattering a dog's, but the same principles apply in Japan: ask permission on land you don't own, keep clear of drinking-water sources and busy paths, and pick a calm day. Here's what the rules say locally.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
Your checklist for a small pet in Osaka
- Stay with your pet for a while if you want to. There's no rush with a small body in a cool room.
- Tell the family, including children, honestly and simply. Let everyone who wants to say goodbye have a moment.
- Check the ground. If the soil is stony, sodden or frozen solid, digging deep enough is a struggle, and a planter burial or cremation may suit better.
- Call your vet or a crematorium when cremation is the plan, and find out if pocket pets can go through on their own tray.
- Get the price in writing ahead of the handover, and check it for a collection charge or an urn you never asked for.
- Mark the spot or the day, with a pebble, something planted or a date circled in the diary, so the goodbye has somewhere to belong.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Osaka?
Usually yes. Nara is about 17 miles away, Kobe is about 17 miles away and Kyoto is about 27 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Osaka page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[2] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
Can I be there when my hamster is cremated?
Some crematoria offer an attended or witnessed cremation, even for small pets. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. For a pocket pet, many providers can fit it in fairly easily because the cremation itself is short. Ask on your first call to an Osaka provider.
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
Can I bury my hamster if I rent or live in an apartment in Osaka?
Not in shared grounds without permission, and never in a public park. A deep planter is the easy answer: a large, deep pot, your pet wrapped near the bottom, plenty of compost and a plant on top. It moves with you. If that isn't practical, communal cremation through a local vet is simple and inexpensive.
