How Japan feels about cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in Japan: about 99.97%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.
The Japan percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Kobe, not as a count of pets.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Kobe
Whatever the weather in Kobe, the rule for a small pet is the same: wrap them, place them in a small box and keep them cool. A fridge gives you a day or two. In cold weather, check your hamster isn't in torpor before deciding; in hot weather, don't leave them in the cage or a car while you think.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Hyogo
If your rodent died of something contagious, the rules in Hyogo and common sense point the same way: cremation is the safer choice, and used bedding should be bagged and binned rather than composted. In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Your checklist for a small pet in Kobe
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, ask them to place the body in a small lined box, bag it and put it in the fridge.
- Ask them to check the others: water bottles, room temperature and food for any cage mates left in their care.

- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.

How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Kobe page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kobe?
Usually yes. Osaka is about 17 miles away, Nara is about 35 miles away and Kyoto is about 39 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?

Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
Can I be there when my hamster is cremated?
Some crematoria offer an attended or witnessed cremation, even for small pets. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. For a pocket pet, many providers can fit it in fairly easily because the cremation itself is short. Ask on your first call to a Kobe provider.
Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?
Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.
