Hamster & Rat Cremation in Tokyo
Most price lists in Tokyo start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.

Hamster & Rat Cremation in Tokyo: what to know
Classroom pets are common in schools across Tokyo, and a hamster's death at school raises its own questions: who decides, who tells the children, what happens over a holiday. Our guide for teachers walks through it, and the local pages below cover burial and cremation near each community.
Pocket-pet keepers across Tokyo tend to fall into two groups: families facing a child's first hamster loss, and experienced rat or degu keepers who've said goodbye many times. The first usually want a gentle, simple plan; the second want a fair price and a crematorium that handles tiny bodies carefully. The community pages below serve both.
We cover 3 communities in Tokyo, from Tokyo, Setagaya and Minato.

Cremation habits in Tokyo, and what they mean for a hamster
People in Tokyo are cremated at a rate of about 99.97%[1], and pet aftercare follows the same pattern, so a vet will often assume you want cremation. You're allowed to say no. For a mouse or a tiny Roborovski, a quiet burial under your own garden shrub is as fitting as any service and costs nothing. If you do cremate, choose communal unless you truly want ash back.
That Tokyo rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What rodent cremation costs around Tokyo
In Tokyo, a pet memorial park lists communal cremation at about JPY 14,300 and individual at about JPY 22,000 for pets under 5 kg,[2] a band that covers every rodent. Prices in Tokyo will differ, but the pattern is similar across Asia: small pets pay the smallest band, and ceremonies cost extra.
In Tokyo, by our estimate, a private communal cremation for a small animal costs about 4.8 times the ward's own collection fee.[3] Many Asian cities offer a municipal route like that, cheaper but with nothing returned. For a hamster in Tokyo, ask whether a public option exists and what happens to animals collected that way before you decide.
| Place | Communal | Individual |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo, pets under 5 kg | about JPY 14,300[2] | about JPY 22,000 |
| Hong Kong, 1 to 5 kg | Government collection (no ashes)[4] | about HKD 1,300[5] |
| Singapore, pets under 5 kg | about SGD 160[6] | about SGD 280[7] |

Before you bury or scatter in Tokyo
A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in Tokyo, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. The general burial and scattering rules follow.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- If your pet died at the vet, you can take them home in a box or ask the practice to arrange cremation. Either is fine; you don't have to choose at the counter.
- If it happened at home, keep your pet cool and away from other animals, including curious cats and dogs.
- If you're unsure it was a death, a vet with small-exotic experience can confirm it, which brings peace of mind after a sudden loss.
- Choose communal or private. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, communal is often the honest choice; for a rat, private returns a heaped tablespoon or so.
- Ask for the small-pet tray specifically when booking private, and get it in writing that no other pet shares the chamber with yours.
- Buy a keepsake sized for a pinch: a pendant or tiny vial suits the amount better than a standard urn.
Keeping their memory alive in Tokyo
If you'd like a keepsake, choose one sized for the ash you'll actually get back. A Syrian hamster leaves a teaspoon or two; a mouse leaves a pinch. The ashes weight estimator works it out, and our keepsakes guide shows pieces that fit.
Next: see what each choice includes on services, run your own numbers in the tools, check the poll results, or pick another area from all locations.

Questions people ask
Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in Tokyo?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds. Many schools prefer communal cremation arranged by a nearby vet, because grounds change and not every family is comfortable with a burial on site. Our plan for classroom goodbyes keeps it simple.
How many communities do you cover in Tokyo?
We currently have local rodent aftercare guides for 3 communities in Tokyo, including Tokyo, Setagaya and Minato. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, burial rules and what to ask a crematorium about very small pets.
Can two rats who died close together be cremated together?
Yes. Ask for them to be cremated together and returned in one container, or for two private cremations with separate vials. Put your choice in writing and ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
Do vets in Tokyo charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
Is cremation common in Tokyo?
For people, 99.97%[1] of deaths in Tokyo end in cremation, and pet crematoria are easier to find where that rate is higher. For hamsters and rats, though, home burial is still very common because it's free and immediate. Both are normal choices.
What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in Tokyo?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
