What rodent aftercare in Tokyo is really like
Tokyo's summers are hot and humid, with the rainy season running into July and typhoons possible into autumn. In that weather a pet's body needs to be kept cool within hours, so wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs or frozen bottles near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. In the cooler months you have a little more time, but a quick decision about collection still makes the days that follow easier.
Most pets in Tokyo live in apartments, often with building rules on size and number, and many families don't own a car. That shapes aftercare more than anything else: you may need a provider that collects from your door, or a mobile cremation vehicle that comes to your street, rather than a drive across the city. When you ask for options, give your ward and building details so any collection can be planned around lifts, stairs and parking.
Because Tokyo has so many providers, prices for the same small cremation can vary a lot. One crematorium may charge its cat rate for a gerbil; another may quote a much lower pocket-pet price. With a pet this light, you can usually drop them off yourself in a lined shoebox, which removes collection fees entirely and gives you more choice.

Cremation habits in Japan, and what they mean for a hamster
Scattering ashes is a familiar ritual in Japan, where around 99.97%[1] of people are cremated. That suits small pets well: a hamster's teaspoon of ash can be scattered in one moment under a rosebush, in a planter or at a spot the family loves, with nothing left to store. Ask permission first if the place isn't yours.

Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Tokyo

What Japan allows for a small pet
Rodents are too small to trigger most of the rules written for livestock and larger pets, so aftercare in Japan is mostly a matter of good sense. The points that do apply are who owns the ground, whether your pet was euthanized and whether any illness could spread. The local burial and scattering notes for Japan follow.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Tokyo
- Stay with your pet for a while if you want to. There's no rush with a small body in a cool room.
- Tell the family, children too, in simple, truthful words, and give anyone who wants one a quiet moment to say goodbye.
- Check the ground. If the soil is stony, sodden or frozen solid, digging deep enough is a struggle, and a planter burial or cremation may suit better.
- Call your vet or a crematorium when cremation is the plan, and find out if pocket pets can go through on their own tray.
- Get the price in writing before handing your pet over, including any urn or collection fee you don't need.
- Mark the spot or the day, with a pebble, something planted or a date circled in the diary, so the goodbye has somewhere to belong.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Pet aftercare in Tokyo is unusually well established. Funerals with a short farewell, temple memorial services for animals, and the family gathering bones with chopsticks after cremation are all familiar here, not unusual requests. If that ritual matters to you, ask whether a private cremation allows you to attend and collect the remains yourself. If you'd prefer something quieter, a private cremation with ashes returned in a simple urn is just as common and just as respectful.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Tokyo?
Usually yes. Setagaya is about 2 miles away, Minato is about 6 miles away and Kawasaki is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Tokyo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?

How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Tokyo?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Tokyo provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Tokyo?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
