Kawasaki, Kanagawa
Hamster and rat goodbyes in Kawasaki: the local picture
Many Kawasaki residents moved here for work and have family elsewhere in Japan, so decisions about a pet's farewell often happen quickly and by phone. An individual cremation with ashes returned is a common choice, because it lets you decide later whether to keep the urn at home, place the ashes at a temple, or take them back to a family home in another prefecture.
Summers in Kawasaki are hot and humid, and winters are cool but mild. In July and August, keep the air conditioner running in the room where your pet lies, and tuck cold packs under a folded towel beside the body, not directly on the fur. Very few homes here have garden space for a grave, and rented flats have none, so cremation is the usual choice. If you rent, check your building's rules before arranging anything on the premises.
With several crematoria in and around Kawasaki, it's worth asking how each one returns ashes from very small pets. A careful provider will be honest that a mouse may leave only a pinch, and that a dwarf hamster's bones are fragile. Anyone who promises a full urn from a 30-gram animal isn't being straight with you.
With roughly 1,475,000 residents, Kawasaki is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Kanagawa communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Yokohama (7 miles, a larger centre), Setagaya (8 miles) and Minato (9 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Japan feels about cremation
About 99.97%[1] of people in Japan are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, crematoria compete for business, which can help you. Ask for a small-pet price for your rat or gerbil; with plenty of providers nearby, someone is likely to quote below the standard cat band.
The Japan figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How Kawasaki's weather shapes the first day
Cold rooms can put hamsters into torpor, a deep sleep that looks a lot like death. Hot rooms can cause heatstroke in rats and hamsters surprisingly quickly. If you're in Kawasaki and unsure, warm a cold hamster gently and watch; if a pet died in the heat, check the cage position for any cage mates still with you.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at about HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet,[5] and Singapore's smallest published private band is about SGD 280.[6] A pocket pet may qualify for less, so ask a Kawasaki provider directly.

Local rules for small-pet burial in Kanagawa
A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in Kanagawa, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. The general burial and scattering rules follow.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
Your checklist for a small pet in Kawasaki
- If your pet died at the vet, you can take them home in a box or ask the practice to arrange cremation. Either is fine; you don't have to choose at the counter.
- If it happened at home, keep your pet cool and away from other animals, including curious cats and dogs.
- If you're unsure it was a death, a vet with small-exotic experience can confirm it, which brings peace of mind after a sudden loss.
- Choose communal or private. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, communal is often the honest choice; for a rat, private returns a heaped tablespoon or so.
- Ask for the small-pet tray by name if you choose private, and confirm in writing that your pet is cremated alone.
- Buy a keepsake sized for a pinch: a pendant or tiny vial suits the amount better than a standard urn.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
Kawasaki is a long, narrow city stretching from Tokyo Bay up the Tama River into the hills, and most residents live in apartment buildings close to commuter lines into Tokyo and Yokohama. If your pet dies at home, a pet funeral service can usually collect from your apartment; mention your ward and whether there is a lift. Some services bring a mobile cremation vehicle, which many apartment managers ask to be parked away from the building.

Questions people ask
Why does the Kawasaki page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Kawasaki?
The closest communities we cover are Yokohama (about 7 miles), Setagaya (about 8 miles) and Minato (about 9 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Kawasaki too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Kawasaki?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Kawasaki provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
