What Sapporo offers when a rat or hamster dies
Sapporo winters are long and snowy, and for months the ground is frozen and buried under snow. Home burial in a garden is rarely practical then, even for families in detached houses on the outskirts. The cold does give you a little more time before arrangements must be made, but keep your pet indoors in a cool room rather than outside, where snow and wildlife can be a problem. In summer, the climate is milder than most of Japan.
Pet farewells in Japan often follow the shape of a human funeral, and Sapporo families are no exception. Many choose an individual cremation where the family is present, then gather the bones with chopsticks, a practice known as kotsuage. Others prefer a communal cremation with a shared memorial. When you ask for options, say which style matters to you, and whether you want to attend in person.
With several crematoria in and around Sapporo, it's worth asking how each one returns ashes from very small pets. A careful provider will be honest that a mouse may leave only a pinch, and that a dwarf hamster's bones are fragile. Anyone who promises a full urn from a 30-gram animal isn't being straight with you.

How Japan feels about cremation
In Japan, roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already understand the difference between private and communal. For a rodent, that difference matters more than usual: a private cremation may return only a teaspoon of ash, while communal returns nothing at all but costs far less. Both are dignified.

Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Sapporo

Burial and scattering rules in Hokkaido
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Hokkaido and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Sapporo
- Look for signs of life gently. In a cold room, a hamster may be in torpor; warmth and a few hours of patience will tell you.
- Keep your pet safe and cool, boxed with a liner, out of the sun and away from other animals.
- Think about euthanasia drugs. When a vet has put your pet to sleep, wildlife can be harmed by the body, so go much deeper and cover with a slab, or cremate instead.
- Compare two options: a private or communal cremation somewhere near Sapporo, and a grave at home. Note the cost of each side by side.
- Consider cage mates who died close together. Ask whether they can be cremated privately and returned in one vial.

Why does the Sapporo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Sapporo vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
How do I explain a hamster's death to a young child?
