What to do when your hamster dies, one step at a time
First check it isn't torpor, then wrap your hamster in a soft cloth and keep them somewhere cool. After that you have a day or so to choose between a home burial and cremation, and UK vet records put a pet hamster's median lifespan at just 1.75 years[1], so you are far from alone in facing this.

The short answer
What should you do first when your hamster dies?
Before anything else, make sure your hamster really has died and isn't in torpor, the cold, slowed-down state hamsters slip into when a room drops below about 60°F (15°C). The Merck Veterinary Manual's hamster chapter notes Syrians can fully hibernate below about 41°F (5°C). If the cage was chilly, warm them gently in your hands for an hour or two. If they stay limp or stiff with no breathing and no response, they've gone.
Then do three simple things: wash your hands (the CDC's advice for small mammals applies here too), lay your hamster on a soft cloth in a small box, and put the box somewhere cool and away from other pets. Nothing else is urgent. You can decide about burial or cremation tomorrow, after a night's sleep, and nobody will think less of you for taking that time.
Today
How do you handle and store the body for the first 24 hours?
- Pick them up with a cloth or gloves. Hamsters sometimes die from infections like wet tail, so treat the body and bedding as you would anything from a sick animal.
- Choose a container. A shoebox, tea box or small wooden box lined with a paper towel or a scrap of their old bedding is perfect. Avoid sealed plastic if you plan to bury.
- Position them gently. Curl your hamster the way they slept, nose tucked in. Stiffness sets in within a few hours and eases again after a day or so, so do this early if you can.
- Keep them cool. A cool room is fine overnight. If burial or cremation is more than a day away, wrap the box in a plastic bag and place it in the fridge, well away from food.
- Clean the cage. Throw away bedding and wipe surfaces with a pet-safe disinfectant, especially if you have other animals.
Most people feel better having a proper container rather than a bag, and research backs that instinct: in a large US survey, 64%[2] of owners rated a trash bag an unacceptable container for a pet's body. A cloth-lined box is simple and dignified, and it works for both burial and cremation.

The question most people ask
Why did my hamster die so suddenly?
Hamsters hide illness well, because in the wild a sick hamster is an easy meal. So a death that feels sudden has often been building quietly for days. The most common specific cause recorded in the VetCompass study of UK pet hamsters is "wet tail", a bacterial gut infection behind 7.88%[3] of deaths. Heart disease, tumors, pneumonia and simple old age account for many of the rest.
Age is the part owners underestimate. A two-year-old Syrian hamster is elderly, and a dwarf hamster can be old at eighteen months. If yours was around that age, there may be no "reason" beyond a small body wearing out. The pet age calculator shows roughly where a hamster's age sits on a human scale, which some people find oddly comforting.
If your hamster was young, or other pets share the room, a quick call to an exotics vet is worthwhile. They can tell you whether the signs you noticed point to something contagious, and whether the cage or accessories should be replaced rather than cleaned.
The main choice
Should you bury or cremate a hamster?
For most families, burial in the garden is the natural answer. It's free, it can happen today, and children can take part. It stops being the obvious choice if you rent, have no garden, might move soon, or your hamster was put to sleep at the vet, because the drugs used remain in the body and can harm wildlife that digs.
| Option | Typical cost | What you keep | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden burial | Free | A spot in the garden | Homeowners, same-day goodbyes |
| Deep planter burial | Price of a pot and a plant | A living plant that can move with you | Renters and apartments |
| Communal cremation | Bottom of the small-pet band | No ashes | No garden, no need for remains |
| Private cremation | Smallest private band, often $100+ | A pinch to a teaspoon of ashes | Keepsakes, moving house, scattering |

If you'd like ashes back
How much does hamster cremation cost?
Very few crematoria have a hamster price. Most place a hamster in their lowest weight band, which in the US typically means $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation, for pets up to 30 lb[4]. PetMD puts the floor at similar levels: about $50 communal and $100 private[5]. Ask directly whether a lower rate applies to pets under a pound; a few providers do have one.
A Syrian hamster weighs roughly 100 to 180 grams, and cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[6]. That means a private cremation returns only a few grams, perhaps a teaspoon. Make sure the provider cremates tiny pets on a small tray so the fragments can be collected, and ask what container comes back, and how long it takes: by our estimate, a conservative typical window for private ashes is 3-14 days typical[7]. Our local pages note what we know about providers near you. The ashes weight estimator turns your hamster's weight into an expected amount.

If there are kids at home
How do you tell a child their hamster has died?
Say it plainly, soon, and in a quiet place: "I have some sad news. Hammy died last night. His body stopped working and he can't come back." Avoid "went to sleep" or "we lost him", which confuse young children. Parents often feel unready, and in one RSPCA survey 93.4%[8] of parents wanted better guidance on this exact moment.
Give children a job: decorating the box, choosing a flower, drawing a picture to go in with their pet. If they want to see the body, let them, with you beside them. Our guide to talking with children about losing a rodent has wording for different ages.
The days after
What should you do with the cage and the empty space?
There's no rule about when to pack up the cage. Some people clear it the same day because the stillness hurts; others leave it for a week. If the death might have been infectious, disinfect or replace wooden items, which can't be fully cleaned. Keep one thing you can hold, such as a chew toy or their little house, and read our ideas for remembering a small pet when you're ready.
The quiet where the wheel used to squeak at midnight is its own kind of grief.
If the loss is hitting harder than you expected, that's common: 66.9%[9] of respondents in one large pet-loss survey were surprised by how intense their grief was. Our page on grief after losing a rodent explains why short-lived pets can leave a long shadow.

Questions people ask
How long can I keep a dead hamster before burying it?
In a cool room, about a day is fine. In the fridge, wrapped in a bag inside a box, you can usually wait two or three days. If you need longer, for example because the ground is frozen, the freezer is an option for burial, but check with a crematorium first if you plan to cremate, as some prefer pets that haven't been frozen.
Is my hamster dead or hibernating?
A hamster in torpor is cold and very still, but you'll usually see a faint breath every so often and the body stays somewhat soft. A hamster that has died becomes stiff within hours, the eyes look dull and sunken, and there's no response to gentle warmth. If the room was cold, warm them slowly for a couple of hours before deciding.
Can I put a dead hamster in the trash?
In many places small pets can legally go in household waste if wrapped, but most families find it upsetting, and it isn't the only low-cost choice. A garden or planter burial is free, and communal cremation through a vet is usually one of the cheapest services on any price list.
What if my hamster died with its eyes open?
That's very common and doesn't mean your hamster suffered. The muscles that close the eyelids relax after death. You can try gently closing them with a clean fingertip soon after death, but if they won't stay closed, a small cloth over the face is a kind alternative.
Do I need a vet after my hamster dies?
No. You don't need a vet to confirm death or to bury your hamster at home. A vet is useful if you want cremation arranged for you, if you're worried about an infection affecting other pets, or if you'd like to know the likely cause.
Should I get another hamster straight away?
There's no right timing. Some families find a new hamster helps a child feel better, while others need a gap. Hamsters live alone, so unlike rats or gerbils there's no lonely cage mate to consider. Wait until you can welcome the new pet for who they are, not as a replacement.
