Cremation habits in Australia, and what they mean for a hamster
People in Australia are cremated at a rate of about 71%[2], and pet aftercare follows the same pattern, so a vet will often assume you want cremation. You're allowed to say no. For a mouse or a tiny Roborovski, a quiet burial under your own garden shrub is as fitting as any service and costs nothing. If you do cremate, choose communal unless you truly want ash back.

Step by step for a small pet in Darwin

- Choose burial or cremation. If the garden is yours, burial costs nothing and can happen today. Communal cremation is cheap, while a private one sends back a pinch of ash to keep.
- If cremating, ask three questions: is there a small-pet rate, will a separate tray be used, and roughly how much ash comes back?
- Clean the cage from top to bottom if sickness might have played a part, before any surviving or new pet moves back in.

How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
Can I bury my hamster if I rent or live in an apartment in Darwin?
Not in shared grounds without permission, and never in a public park. A deep planter is the easy answer: a large, deep pot, your pet wrapped near the bottom, plenty of compost and a plant on top. What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[8] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
