When a small pet dies in Copenhagen: burial or cremation
A hamster or mouse in Copenhagen can be buried today for nothing or cremated for a keepsake pinch of ash. Here's how to choose honestly, and what each path really costs.
- Check for torpor before anything else
- Planter burial if you have no garden
- Gentle help when a child is grieving

Hamster and rat goodbyes in Copenhagen: the local picture
Most Copenhageners live in apartments, often several floors up without a lift, and many households don't own a car. That makes moving a pet who has died harder than it sounds, whether it is a large animal or a carrier that has to go down four flights of stairs. Before you try to manage it by cargo bike or taxi, ask whether the provider or your vet can collect from home, and mention the stairs so they come prepared.
Copenhagen's weather is mild but grey and wet much of the year, and winter days are short. That gives you a little breathing room, since a pet kept in a cool room will stay stable for a day while you decide. In the warmer weeks of July and August, move faster and keep the body out of sunny rooms and away from radiators.
If your rat or hamster was put to sleep at a Copenhagen emergency or exotics hospital, aftercare is usually offered there and then. You can say yes, or you can take your pet home in a small box and decide later. There's no pressure to choose at the counter, and a lot of families prefer to bury a tiny pet at home.
About 794,000 people live in Copenhagen.
Our pages for Odense (87 miles) and Aarhus (98 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Copenhagen as well.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
About 86.48%[1] of people in Denmark are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, crematoria compete for business, which can help you. Ask for a small-pet price for your rat or gerbil; with plenty of providers nearby, someone is likely to quote below the standard cat band.

What the seasons mean for rodent aftercare in Copenhagen
Whatever the weather in Copenhagen, the rule for a small pet is the same: wrap them, place them in a small box and keep them cool. A fridge gives you a day or two. In cold weather, check your hamster isn't in torpor before deciding; in hot weather, don't leave them in the cage or a car while you think.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Copenhagen?
In Copenhagen, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.

What Capital Region allows for a small pet
If your rodent died of something contagious, the rules in Capital Region and common sense point the same way: cremation is the safer choice, and used bedding should be bagged and binned rather than composted. Your vet can tell you whether the illness was likely infectious. Burial and scattering details for Capital Region are set out below.
The first day, one step at a time
- Take a photo or a clipping from their coat, and hold on to the wheel, hammock or hideout they loved if that feels right.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge when you can't bury or hand them over within the next few hours, and check with the provider before using the freezer.
- If renting, choose a planter: the deepest, widest pot you can find, your pet low down, compost on top and a plant that means something to you.
- If you'd rather cremate, approach a crematorium yourself, or ask us to find small-pet options and let us do the ringing round.
- Watch surviving cage mates over the next two weeks. More handling, longer free-range time and a snug nest box all make a difference.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Pets in Copenhagen live very urban lives, in courtyard flats in Nørrebro and Vesterbro, on balconies above the harbor and in small gardens in the outer districts. Because so many households have no garden of their own, burial at home is rarely an option, and many owners choose individual cremation so there is something tangible to keep. Ask clearly whether your pet will be cremated alone, and how long it takes before the ashes come back.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Denmark?
For people, yes: about 86.48%[1] of Denmark deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Copenhagen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Copenhagen?
Usually yes. Odense is about 87 miles away and Aarhus is about 98 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?
A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in Copenhagen?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near Copenhagen, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
