Saying goodbye to a hamster, rat or mouse in Regensburg
A hamster or mouse in Regensburg can be buried today for nothing or cremated for a keepsake pinch of ash. Here's how to choose honestly, and what each path really costs.
- Communal or private for a 100 g pet
- Cage mates cremated together or apart
- Tiny vials and keepsakes that fit

Regensburg, Bavaria
Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Regensburg
Regensburg is a compact city on the Danube, and many people live in apartments in and around the medieval old town, where parking is scarce and streets are narrow. If your pet dies at home, a provider may need to know about stairs, lifts and where a vehicle can stop. Suburbs and villages across the river and out towards the Upper Palatinate countryside are easier to reach, but it still helps to describe access when you ask for options.
Unlike human ashes in Germany, a pet's ashes can generally be kept at home, and many Regensburg families choose individual cremation so an urn can stay with them. Communal cremation, with no ashes returned, is a lower-cost alternative. Some people with a garden consider burial instead; if you're thinking about that, check the rules with your local authority first, as they depend on where the land is and what's nearby.
For a family in Regensburg, the honest question is usually whether cremation is worth it for a pet that cost very little. There's no wrong answer. Burial is free and happens today. Private cremation gives you a keepsake pinch to carry if you move. Communal cremation sits in between: low cost, dignified, but no ashes back.
Regensburg's population is around 153,000, the 4th-largest of the 5 Bavaria communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Regensburg are based about 55 miles away in Nuremberg, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Regensburg often end up using a provider from Nuremberg (55 miles, a larger centre), Munich (65 miles, a larger centre) and Augsburg (71 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
76.0%[1]
In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
1.75 years[2]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and O'Neill et al. 2022, Journal of Small Animal Practice.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany choosing cremation, local families rarely have to explain why they'd like a pet's ashes home. Even for a hamster, a small vial on a shelf is an ordinary, accepted thing here. Just be realistic about how little comes back, and choose a keepsake sized for a pinch.
We take the Germany rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Regensburg, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Regensburg
Cold rooms can put hamsters into torpor, a deep sleep that looks a lot like death. Hot rooms can cause heatstroke in rats and hamsters surprisingly quickly. If you're in Regensburg and unsure, warm a cold hamster gently and watch; if a pet died in the heat, check the cage position for any cage mates still with you.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Regensburg?
In Regensburg, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.

Burial and scattering rules in Bavaria
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[6], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in Bavaria. Local burial and scattering rules follow.
In Germany, you can usually bury a small pet on your own land outside water- and nature-protection areas, subject to local conditions. For a hamster or degu, many families go deeper to keep foxes out. A Tierkrematorium offers Einzeleinäscherung (individual) or Sammeleinäscherung (collective); for a pet this small, ask whether a lower Kleintier price applies.
Your checklist for a small pet in Regensburg
- Check for torpor first. If your hamster is cold and stiff after a chilly night, warm them gently in your hands or a towel and watch closely for a few hours.
- Once you're sure, take your time. Settle them into a tissue-lined tub or a little cardboard box, adding a pinch of the bedding they slept in.
- Let cage mates say goodbye. Rats, mice and gerbils often sniff a companion's body for a few minutes, and many keepers feel it helps them.
- Keep the box cool. A chilly room will do for a few hours; for a day or two, wrap and bag your pet and use the fridge.
- Choose burial or cremation. Burial is free and immediate if you own the ground; communal cremation costs little; private returns a keepsake pinch.
- If cremating, ask three questions: is there a small-pet rate, will a separate tray be used, and roughly how much ash comes back?
- Clean the cage from top to bottom if sickness might have played a part, before any surviving or new pet moves back in.
Keeping their memory alive in Regensburg
Regensburg's winters are cold and damp, with river fog along the Danube and frosty nights, while summers can be warm and humid. In cold months you have a little more time to decide, but keep your pet's body in the coolest room, wrapped and away from heating. In a summer heatwave, move faster, and ask your vet whether they can keep your pet in cold storage while you choose between cremation options.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Regensburg?
Usually yes. Nuremberg is about 55 miles away, Munich is about 65 miles away and Augsburg is about 71 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Regensburg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Nuremberg to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Nuremberg (roughly 55 miles from Regensburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Regensburg vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
