Whether you may bury a pet in your own garden in the Hanover area depends on local conditions, such as water-protection zones and the size of the plot, so ask your municipality before digging. How Germany feels about cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in Germany: about 76.0%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.
That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Hanover only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Hanover
We don't hold detailed weather records for Hanover, so use your own thermometer. Lower Saxony rules for pocket pets
A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in Lower Saxony, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. In Germany, you can usually bury a small pet on your own land outside water- and nature-protection areas, subject to local conditions. For a hamster or degu, many families go deeper to keep foxes out. A Tierkrematorium offers Einzeleinäscherung (individual) or Sammeleinäscherung (collective); for a pet this small, ask whether a lower Kleintier price applies.
A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- Breathe. Nobody needs phoning straight away for an animal this size. Fold a soft cloth or a sheet of paper towel around them and settle them into a little box.
- Talk to the children in plain words: say your pet has died, not that they went to sleep. Let them help choose the box or draw a picture to go inside.
- Decide where your pet will rest. Your own garden, a deep planter, or a crematorium serving Hanover.
- If burying, dig deeper than feels necessary and put a flat stone or slab over the spot so foxes, cats and dogs can't dig.
- If cremating, ring one or two providers, then request the price by email with the words private or communal on it and any container charge spelled out.

- Plan a small ritual, and five minutes is enough: say something, add a bloom, and tuck a treat they loved next to them.

Lay your pet on a towel in an unheated room, turn the radiator off, and place cold packs wrapped in cloth nearby on warmer days. What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Can I bury my hamster if I rent or live in an apartment in Hanover?
Not in shared grounds without permission, and never in a public park. A deep planter is the easy answer: a large, deep pot, your pet wrapped near the bottom, plenty of compost and a plant on top. It moves with you. If that isn't practical, communal cremation through a local vet is simple and inexpensive.
