Dublin, Leinster
What rodent aftercare in Dublin is really like
Dublin's green spaces, from the Phoenix Park to the Bull Island strands, Sandymount and the Dublin Mountains, are part of how many families here spend time with their animals, and they often become part of how people say goodbye. Some families ask for ashes back so they can bring a small portion to a place that mattered, while others keep them at home. Ask any provider for written confirmation of whether the cremation is individual, and whether the ashes returned are only your pet's.
Dublin is a city of terraced houses, newer apartment blocks and long suburban estates stretching out toward Fingal and the mountains, and many homes have only a small back garden. That matters because garden burial, long the Irish default for a family pet, is not realistic for everyone. Cremation has become a common choice for pets even though most Irish families still bury their human dead, and home collection is usually what Dublin owners ask for first.
Schools and after-school clubs across Dublin keep classroom hamsters, mice and rats, so a child's first experience of a pet dying often happens away from home. If you're a teacher or a parent volunteer, a simple ceremony and a planter burial in the school garden, with permission, can be gentle and memorable. Communal cremation through a local vet is the easy alternative.
Dublin's population is around 1,228,000.
If you want to compare providers, look at Galway (116 miles) and Cork (137 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
26.56%[1]
In 2024, 26.56% of deaths in the Republic of Ireland were cremated (9,341 of 35,173; excludes one crematorium).

Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Ireland feels about cremation
With cremation at about 26.56%[1] in Ireland, many families here have land and a habit of burying animals on it. That habit works for rodents too, with one caution: if your pet was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body, so choose a spot where no dog, raccoon or bird of prey is likely to dig, and weigh it down well.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) is where the Ireland figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Dublin tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Dublin
Seasons in Dublin shape the ceremony more than the logistics. A pet this small can be cooled and kept safely for a day or two whatever the weather, so pick a moment when the family can be together and the ground, or the planter, is ready.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
Ashes don't always come back quickly in Europe. In Sweden, for example, individual cremations usually come back in two to four weeks.[5] If you live in Dublin and hope to have a keepsake before a family gathering or a move, check the likely return date before booking, and whether going through the vet adds time.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Leinster
Nothing in Leinster requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
Dublin's own guidance is published by Dublin City Council Animal Welfare Unit; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation.
In Ireland, one pet crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg, which covers every rodent. Garden burial on your own land is common for small pets; bury deep and away from water. Ask whether private cremation of a hamster or rat uses a small tray, so there's something meaningful to return.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, ask them to place the body in a small lined box, bag it and put it in the fridge.
- Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup if the death was unexpected; heat, drafts or a jammed water bottle are worth ruling out.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.
Small memorials for small pets
Dublin's weather is mild and damp for most of the year, with few hard frosts and rarely any real heat. That gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but a cool room and a sheet or blanket underneath are still wise. If your pet dies on a road or in a park, Dublin City Council's animal welfare team takes reports of animals found dead in public places through its online Citizen Hub, with details and the exact location.

Questions people ask
How do Ireland attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) puts the Ireland human cremation rate at about 26.56%[1]. We show it on the Dublin page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Dublin?
The closest communities we cover are Galway (about 116 miles) and Cork (about 137 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Dublin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I be there when my hamster is cremated?
Some crematoria offer an attended or witnessed cremation, even for small pets. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. For a pocket pet, many providers can fit it in fairly easily because the cremation itself is short. Ask on your first call to a Dublin provider.
Is it legal to bury a hamster in my garden in Ireland?
In most European countries, burying a small animal on property you own is allowed with conditions: away from water sources, outside protected zones and not if the animal had a notifiable disease. Details differ by country and sometimes by municipality, so check with your town hall or council. If you're renting or in an apartment in Dublin, individual or collective cremation through your vet is the usual route.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
Schools usually let the teacher decide, often with parents. A short ceremony and a burial in the school garden, with the head's permission, or communal cremation through a local vet, are the common choices. Our classroom goodbye guide has a simple plan teachers can use in Dublin or anywhere.
