With cremation at about 38.16%[1] in Italy, many families here have land and a habit of burying animals on it. That habit works for rodents too, with one caution: if your pet was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body, so choose a spot where no dog, raccoon or bird of prey is likely to dig, and weigh it down well.

Nothing in Veneto requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- If an escaped rat, mouse or hamster is found dead in the house, put gloves on, scoop them up in a cloth and set them down in a shoebox.
- Think about poison. Where rodent bait might have been within reach, let your vet know and steer other pets clear of the area.
- Skip the home grave if bait is possible. An owl, cat or dog that unearths a poisoned body can be poisoned too, which makes cremation the safer choice.
- Clean the place where they were found using hot water and soap.
- Forgive yourself. Rodents are escape artists, and even careful keepers lose one behind a sofa or under the floorboards.
- Check cage doors and gaps so the rest of the group don't follow; a cheap door clip is all it usually takes.
