What Otago allows for a small pet
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Otago and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
In New Zealand, hamsters aren't allowed as pets, so the rodents families grieve are usually rats and mice. Councils set the rules on home burial, and many urban sections are small, so a planter or cremation is common. An Auckland crematorium's smallest published band is 2 to 7 kg, far heavier than a rat, so ask for a small-pet price.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Queenstown
- Look for signs of life gently. In a cold room, a hamster may be in torpor; warmth and a few hours of patience will tell you.
- Keep your pet safe and cool in a lined box, away from pets and direct sun.
- Think about euthanasia drugs. When a vet has put your pet to sleep, wildlife can be harmed by the body, so go much deeper and cover with a slab, or cremate instead.

Can I send my pet for cremation in Queenstown if it died of an illness?
